Topical Encyclopedia
The term "weepeth" is an archaic form of the verb "weep," which means to shed tears or express sorrow. In the context of the Bible, weeping is often associated with mourning, repentance, compassion, and sometimes joy. The act of weeping is a profound expression of human emotion and is frequently mentioned throughout the Scriptures, reflecting the deep connection between the divine and human experiences.

Biblical Instances of Weeping:

1.Weeping in Mourning and Sorrow:
· In the Old Testament, weeping is often associated with mourning the loss of loved ones or the destruction of cities. For example, in the book of Lamentations, the prophet Jeremiah weeps over the destruction of Jerusalem: "My eyes fail from weeping, I am in torment within; my heart is poured out on the ground because my people are destroyed" (Lamentations 2:11).
· In Genesis, Joseph weeps upon reuniting with his brothers, demonstrating both sorrow for past grievances and joy for reconciliation: "Then Joseph hurried out, because he was deeply moved over his brother, and he looked for a place to weep. He entered his chamber and wept there" (Genesis 43:30).

2.Weeping in Repentance:
· Weeping is also a sign of repentance and contrition. In the book of Joel, the prophet calls the people to repentance with fasting and weeping: "Return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning" (Joel 2:12).
· King David, in his penitential psalms, often weeps as he seeks God's forgiveness for his sins: "I am weary from groaning; all night I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears" (Psalm 6:6).

3.Weeping in Compassion and Empathy:
· Jesus Christ Himself wept, showing His compassion and empathy for human suffering. In the shortest verse of the Bible, "Jesus wept" (John 11:35), He expresses His sorrow at the death of Lazarus and the grief of those around Him.
· The Apostle Paul encourages believers to share in each other's joys and sorrows: "Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep" (Romans 12:15).

4.Weeping in Eschatological Hope:
· The Bible also speaks of a future time when God will wipe away every tear, signifying the end of suffering and the fulfillment of divine promises: "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away" (Revelation 21:4).

Theological Significance:

Weeping in the Bible is not merely an expression of human emotion but is deeply intertwined with spiritual realities. It reflects the brokenness of the world due to sin, the need for repentance, and the hope of redemption. The act of weeping is a reminder of the compassionate nature of God, who is intimately aware of human suffering and promises ultimate restoration and joy for His people.
