Vanity
Topical Encyclopedia
In the context of the Bible, "vanity" often refers to the fleeting, futile, and meaningless nature of earthly pursuits and human endeavors when they are disconnected from God. The term is most prominently featured in the book of Ecclesiastes, where the Preacher, traditionally understood to be King Solomon, reflects on the emptiness of life without divine purpose.

Ecclesiastes and the Theme of Vanity

The book of Ecclesiastes opens with the famous declaration, "Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity" (Ecclesiastes 1:2). This sets the tone for the entire book, which explores the various aspects of life—wisdom, pleasure, work, and wealth—and concludes that they are ultimately meaningless when pursued for their own sake. The Hebrew word translated as "vanity" is "hevel," which can also mean "breath" or "vapor," emphasizing the transient and insubstantial nature of worldly things.

Throughout Ecclesiastes, the Preacher examines different avenues of human achievement and enjoyment, only to find them lacking in true fulfillment. For instance, he writes, "I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and indeed, all is vanity and a chasing after the wind" (Ecclesiastes 1:14). This perspective underscores the futility of seeking satisfaction in temporal things apart from God.

Vanity in the Psalms and Proverbs

The theme of vanity is also present in the Psalms and Proverbs, where it is often associated with the fleeting nature of human life and the futility of trusting in riches or human strength.Psalm 39:5-6 states, "Behold, You have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before You. Truly, each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah. Surely every man walks in futility; he heaps up wealth not knowing who will gather it."

Proverbs warns against the vanity of relying on wealth and human wisdom.Proverbs 31:30 declares, "Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised." This verse highlights the temporary nature of physical beauty and the enduring value of godly character.

New Testament Perspective

In the New Testament, the concept of vanity is echoed in the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. Jesus warns against storing up treasures on earth, where they are subject to decay and theft, and instead encourages storing up treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19-20). The apostle Paul speaks of the futility of creation subjected to corruption and the hope of redemption through Christ (Romans 8:20-21).

Paul also addresses the vanity of human wisdom and philosophy when compared to the wisdom of God. In1 Corinthians 3:19-20 , he writes, "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: 'He catches the wise in their craftiness.' And again, 'The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.'"

Practical Implications

The biblical teaching on vanity serves as a reminder to believers to focus on eternal values and to seek fulfillment in a relationship with God rather than in the temporary pleasures and achievements of this world. It calls for a life oriented toward God's purposes, recognizing that true meaning and satisfaction are found in Him alone.

Vanity

Does not usually denote, in Scripture, self-conceit or personal pride,2 Peter 2:18, but sometimes emptiness and fruitlessness,Job 7:3Psalm 144:4Ecclesiastes 1:1-18. It often denotes wickedness, particularly falsehood, De 32:21Psalm 4:2 24:4 119:37, and sometimes idols and idol-worship,2 Kings 17:15Jeremiah 2:5 18:15Jonah 2:8. Compare Paul's expression, "they turned the truth of God into a lie,"Romans 1:25. "In vain," in the second commandment,Exodus 20:7, is unnecessarily and irreverently. "Vain men,"2 Samuel 6:202 Chronicles 13:7, are dissolute and worthless fellows.

VANITY, VANITIES

"Vanity" does not often occur in the New Testament; but see VAIN, VAINGLORY. InActs 14:15 we have mataios, "empty," translated "vanities" (of idols); mataiotes, "emptiness," "transitoriness" (Romans 8:20, "The creation was subjected to vanity," frailty, transitoriness); "emptiness," "folly" (Ephesians 4:172 Peter 2:18).

Among other changes for "vanity" the Revised Version (British and American) has "iniquity" (Job 15:35Psalm 10:7); "falsehood" (Psalm 12:2;Psalm 41:6); "deceit" (Psalm 144:8, 11); "vapor" (Proverbs 21:6); "calamity" (Proverbs 22:8 margin "vanity"); "a breath" (Isaiah 57:13); "wickedly" (Isaiah 58:9). Conversely, for "Wherefore hast thou made all men in vain?" (Psalm 89:47), "For what vanity hast thou created all the children of men!"; for "Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing" (Isaiah 41:29), "Behold, all of them, their works are vanity and nought," margin as the King James Version, with "nought" for "nothing."
