Thick
Topical Encyclopedia
In biblical literature, the term "thick" is often used to describe density, abundance, or impenetrability, whether in reference to physical objects, natural phenomena, or metaphorical concepts. The usage of "thick" can be found in various contexts throughout the Scriptures, illustrating both the physical and spiritual dimensions of the biblical narrative.

1.Thick Darkness: One of the most significant uses of "thick" in the Bible is in the context of "thick darkness." This term is often associated with the presence of God or divine judgment. InExodus 20:21 , it is written, "So the people stood at a distance as Moses approached the thick darkness where God was." Here, "thick darkness" signifies the awe-inspiring and mysterious presence of God, emphasizing His transcendence and the reverence due to Him.

2.Thick Clouds: The imagery of thick clouds is frequently used to convey God's majesty and power. InJob 22:14 , it states, "Thick clouds veil Him so He does not see us as He traverses the vault of heaven." This passage highlights the separation between the divine and the human, with thick clouds symbolizing the hidden and unapproachable nature of God.

3.Thick Forests and Vegetation: The Bible also uses "thick" to describe lush and dense vegetation, often symbolizing prosperity and abundance. InIsaiah 9:18 , the prophet speaks of the land being consumed by fire, "and it will devour the thorns and briers and set the forests ablaze, so that they will rise in a column of smoke." The thick forests here represent the richness of the land, which can be both a blessing and a source of judgment when consumed by fire.

4.Thick Walls and Fortifications: In a more literal sense, "thick" is used to describe the strength and impenetrability of walls and fortifications. In the account of the fall of Jericho,Joshua 6:20 recounts, "When the trumpets sounded, the people shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the people gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed." Although the term "thick" is not explicitly used, the context implies the formidable nature of the walls that were miraculously brought down by divine intervention.

5.Thick as a Metaphor for Obstinacy: In a metaphorical sense, "thick" can describe the stubbornness or obstinacy of people. InIsaiah 6:10 , the prophet is instructed, "Make the hearts of this people calloused; deafen their ears and close their eyes." The thickening of hearts symbolizes spiritual insensitivity and resistance to God's message.

The term "thick" in the Bible, therefore, serves as a multifaceted descriptor that enriches the text with layers of meaning, from the tangible to the spiritual. Whether illustrating the grandeur of God's presence, the richness of creation, or the stubbornness of the human heart, "thick" provides a vivid portrayal of the biblical world's complexity and depth.

THICK TREES

(`ets `abhoth (Leviticus 23:40Nehemiah 8:15)): One of the varieties of trees which the Israelites were directed to use at the Feast of Tabernacles; in the latter passage they are expressly directed to make booths with them. According to the Talmudic writings, the "thick trees" are myrtles (Suk. 12a; Jeremiah Suk. iii, 53d), and further tradition has prescribed certain special features as to the varieties of myrtle employed, without which they cannot be used in the ritual of the feast. In Sirach 14:18 "thick tree" represents dendron dasu, "leafy tree."
