In biblical terms, "shedding" often refers to the act of shedding blood, which is a significant theme throughout the Scriptures. The shedding of blood is frequently associated with sacrifice, atonement, and the consequences of sin. It is a concept that underscores the gravity of sin and the necessity of redemption.
Old Testament ContextThe concept of shedding blood is introduced early in the Bible. In
Genesis 4:10, after Cain kills Abel, God says, "What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground." This passage highlights the seriousness of murder and the shedding of innocent blood, which is a sin that cries out for justice.
The sacrificial system established in the Mosaic Law further emphasizes the importance of blood.
Leviticus 17:11 states, "For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement by reason of the life." Here, the shedding of animal blood is portrayed as a means of atonement, symbolizing the covering of sin and the restoration of the relationship between God and His people.
The prohibition against shedding innocent blood is reiterated in the Ten Commandments, specifically in the commandment "You shall not murder" (
Exodus 20:13). The shedding of innocent blood is considered a grave sin, and numerous passages in the Old Testament, such as
Proverbs 6:16-17, list it among the things that the Lord hates.
New Testament FulfillmentIn the New Testament, the theme of shedding blood reaches its fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ. The sacrificial system of the Old Testament is seen as a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice made by Christ.
Hebrews 9:22 states, "According to the Law, in fact, nearly everything must be purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness."
Jesus' crucifixion is the pivotal event concerning the shedding of blood in the New Testament. His blood is described as the means by which believers are redeemed and cleansed from sin. In
Matthew 26:28, during the Last Supper, Jesus says, "This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." This statement underscores the belief that Jesus' sacrificial death was necessary for the forgiveness and salvation of humanity.
The Apostle Paul also emphasizes the significance of Christ's blood in the process of reconciliation. In
Ephesians 1:7, he writes, "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace." The shedding of Christ's blood is thus central to the Christian understanding of salvation and grace.
Theological ImplicationsThe shedding of blood in the Bible is not merely a physical act but carries deep spiritual and theological implications. It serves as a reminder of the seriousness of sin and the cost of redemption. The sacrificial system of the Old Testament and the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ in the New Testament both point to the necessity of atonement and the profound love of God in providing a means for humanity's salvation.
In summary, the concept of shedding, particularly in relation to blood, is a foundational element in the biblical narrative, illustrating the themes of justice, sacrifice, and redemption that are central to the Christian faith.

SHED, SHEDDINGThe three Hebrew words, naghar, sim or sum and shaphakh, translated "shed" in many Old Testament passages, always mean a "pouring out," and in nearly every case point to the effusion of blood (Genesis 9:6Numbers 35:33Deuteronomy 21:72 Samuel 20:101 Chronicles 22:8Proverbs 1:16, etc.). The Greek words ekcheo, and ekchuno, have precisely the same specific meaning (Matthew 23:35;Matthew 26:28Mark 14:24Luke 11:50Hebrews 9:22Revelation 16:6). Sometimes they are tropically used in reference to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:33 the King James Version;Titus 3:6), and to the outpouring of the love of God in the believer's heart (Romans 5:5).
