Definition and General Understanding:

Respect, in a biblical context, refers to the acknowledgment and appreciation of the worth, dignity, and authority of individuals and institutions as ordained by God. It involves treating others with honor and consideration, recognizing their God-given value and roles. Respect is a fundamental aspect of Christian ethics and interpersonal relationships, deeply rooted in the teachings of Scripture.

Biblical Foundations:

1.Respect for God:
The Bible emphasizes the utmost respect for God, His commandments, and His divine authority. This reverence is foundational to the Christian faith. InDeuteronomy 6:5, believers are instructed to "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." This love inherently includes respect, as it acknowledges God's supreme position and sovereignty.

2.Respect for Authority:
Scripture teaches respect for earthly authorities as they are instituted by God.Romans 13:1-2 states, "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." This passage underscores the importance of respecting governmental and institutional leaders.

3.Respect for Parents:
The command to honor one's parents is a direct call to respect them.Exodus 20:12 commands, "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you." This respect is not only a duty but also carries a promise of blessing.

4.Respect for Others:
Respect for fellow human beings is a reflection of the love and value God places on each person. In1 Peter 2:17 , believers are instructed to "Show proper respect to everyone, love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king." This verse encapsulates the broad spectrum of respect that Christians are to exhibit towards others, including fellow believers and those in authority.

5.Respect in Marriage:
Ephesians 5:33 highlights the mutual respect required in marriage: "Nevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband." This mutual respect is foundational for a harmonious and God-honoring marital relationship.

Practical Implications:

Respect in the Christian life is not merely an external action but an internal attitude that reflects one's relationship with God. It involves humility, recognizing the image of God in others, and acting with kindness and consideration. Respect is demonstrated through listening, valuing others' opinions, and treating people with dignity, regardless of their status or position.

Challenges to Respect:

In a fallen world, respect can be challenged by pride, prejudice, and selfishness. Christians are called to overcome these barriers by relying on the Holy Spirit to cultivate a heart of humility and love.Philippians 2:3 advises, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves."

Conclusion:

While respect is a fundamental biblical principle, it requires intentionality and grace to practice consistently. By adhering to the teachings of Scripture and seeking to emulate Christ's example, believers can foster a culture of respect that honors God and uplifts others.

RESPECT OF PERSONS

re-spekt': The phrase nasa' phanim, means literally, "lift up the face," and, among other translations, is rendered indifferently "accept" or "respect the person" in the King James Version (contrastProverbs 18:5 and 24:23). As applied to a (prostrate) suppliant, the phrase means "receive him with favor," and is so used in1 Samuel 25:35Malachi 1:8, 9 (compareGenesis 19:21, etc.). By a shift in force the phrase came to mean "accept the person instead of the cause" or "show partiality" (Job 13:8, 10 the American Standard Revised Version), and is so used commonly. A literal translation into Greek gave lambano prosopon (Sirach 35:13 (32:16);Luke 20:21Galatians 2:6), with the noun prosopolempsia, "face-taking" (Romans 2:11Ephesians 6:9Colossians 3:25James 2:1), rendered uniformly "respect of persons" in English Versions of the Bible. A noun prosopolemptes, "respecter of persons," and a verb prosopolempteo, are foundActs 10:34James 2:9. God's judgment rests solely on the character of the man and will be influenced by no worldly (Ephesians 6:9) or national (Romans 2:11) considerations.
