In the biblical context, the concept of "purchase" encompasses various aspects of acquiring goods, land, or even spiritual redemption. The act of purchasing is often associated with legal transactions, covenantal agreements, and symbolic representations of deeper theological truths.
Old Testament ContextIn the Old Testament, purchasing land or goods was a common practice, often involving formal agreements and witnesses. One notable example is the purchase of the cave of Machpelah by Abraham as a burial site for his wife Sarah. This transaction is detailed in
Genesis 23:16-18 : "Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the current commercial standard. So Ephron’s field in Machpelah near Mamre—the field with its cave and all the trees anywhere within the boundaries of the field—was deeded over to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city."
The purchase of land was not only a practical necessity but also a means of establishing a lasting inheritance for future generations. The legal and communal aspects of such transactions underscored the importance of integrity and fairness in business dealings.
New Testament ContextIn the New Testament, the concept of purchase takes on a profound spiritual dimension. The most significant purchase is the redemption of humanity through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. This is articulated in
1 Corinthians 6:20 : "You were bought at a price; therefore glorify God with your body." Here, the "price" refers to the sacrificial death of Christ, which secured the salvation of believers.
The theme of redemption as a purchase is further emphasized in
1 Peter 1:18-19 : "For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life you inherited from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot." This passage highlights the infinite value of Christ's sacrifice, contrasting it with the temporal nature of earthly wealth.
Theological ImplicationsThe biblical notion of purchase extends beyond mere economic transactions to encompass spiritual truths. The purchase of land in the Old Testament often symbolized God's promises and faithfulness to His people. In the New Testament, the purchase of believers through Christ's blood signifies the ultimate act of divine love and grace.
The concept of purchase also serves as a reminder of the believer's responsibility to live a life that honors the price paid for their redemption. As stewards of God's grace, Christians are called to conduct their lives with integrity, reflecting the transformative power of Christ's sacrificial purchase.
Practical ApplicationsIn practical terms, the biblical principles surrounding purchase encourage ethical behavior in financial dealings. Believers are urged to engage in honest transactions, uphold justice, and demonstrate generosity. The biblical model of purchase, rooted in covenant and community, challenges Christians to prioritize relationships and spiritual values over material gain.
Overall, the concept of purchase in the Bible is rich with meaning, encompassing both the tangible and the spiritual, and serving as a testament to God's redemptive work throughout history.

PURCHASEpur'-chats: In modern English, "to acquire by payment," in Elizabethan English, "to acquire" by any means. In the Old Testament, the King James Version has used "purchase" to represent qanah, and its derivatives (verb and noun), except inLeviticus 25:33, where the word is ga'al (the Revised Version (British and American) "redeem"). In the New Testament the noun does not occur and the verb is used for ktaomai, inActs 1:18;Acts 8:20, and peripoieo, inActs 20:281 Timothy 3:13. But none of these words connotes the payment of a price, so that the Revised Version (British and American) has kept the word only inActs 20:28 (margin "acquired"), changing it into "obtain" inActs 1:18;Acts 8:20, and "gain" in1 Timothy 3:13. In the Old Testament, the Revised Version margin has "gotten" inExodus 15:16 and the American Standard Revised Version has (very properly) introduced the same word into the text ofPsalm 74:2;Psalm 78:54.
