Persons
Topical Encyclopedia
In the biblical context, the term "persons" refers to individual human beings created by God, each possessing unique attributes and responsibilities. The Bible presents a comprehensive view of persons, emphasizing their creation, nature, roles, and relationship with God and one another.

Creation of Persons

The Bible begins with the account of creation, where God creates human beings in His own image.Genesis 1:27 states, "So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." This foundational verse establishes the inherent dignity and worth of every person, as they reflect the image of their Creator. The creation of persons is further detailed inGenesis 2:7 : "Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being."

Nature of Persons

Persons are depicted in the Bible as both physical and spiritual beings. They possess a body, soul, and spirit, which together constitute their whole being. The spiritual aspect of persons is highlighted inEcclesiastes 12:7 : "Then the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it." This dual nature underscores the temporary nature of the physical body and the eternal aspect of the spirit.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Bible assigns specific roles and responsibilities to persons, particularly in the context of family, community, and worship. In the family, persons are called to fulfill roles as husbands, wives, parents, and children, each with distinct duties.Ephesians 5:22-25 instructs, "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord... Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her." Children are exhorted to obey their parents inEphesians 6:1 : "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right."

In the community, persons are encouraged to live in harmony and serve one another.Romans 12:10 advises, "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another." The Bible also emphasizes the importance of work and stewardship, as seen inColossians 3:23 : "Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, for the Lord and not for men."

Relationship with God

The relationship between persons and God is central to the biblical narrative. Persons are called to love, worship, and obey God, as seen inDeuteronomy 6:5 : "And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." This relationship is marred by sin, which separates persons from God, as described inRomans 3:23 : "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

However, the Bible also presents the redemptive work of Jesus Christ as the means by which persons can be reconciled to God.John 3:16 declares, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." Through faith in Christ, persons are restored to a right relationship with God and are called to live as His children.

Diversity and Unity

The Bible acknowledges the diversity among persons, including differences in ethnicity, language, and culture. Yet, it also emphasizes the unity of all believers in Christ.Galatians 3:28 affirms, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." This unity transcends earthly distinctions and reflects the spiritual oneness of the body of Christ.

Eternal Destiny

The Bible teaches that persons have an eternal destiny, determined by their relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Those who accept Christ are promised eternal life, as stated inJohn 5:24 : "Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life." Conversely, those who reject Christ face eternal separation from God, as described inRevelation 20:15 : "And if anyone was found whose name was not written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire."

In summary, the Bible presents a profound and multifaceted view of persons, highlighting their creation in God's image, their roles and responsibilities, their relationship with God, and their eternal destiny.

RESPECT OF PERSONS

re-spekt': The phrase nasa' phanim, means literally, "lift up the face," and, among other translations, is rendered indifferently "accept" or "respect the person" in the King James Version (contrastProverbs 18:5 and 24:23). As applied to a (prostrate) suppliant, the phrase means "receive him with favor," and is so used in1 Samuel 25:35Malachi 1:8, 9 (compareGenesis 19:21, etc.). By a shift in force the phrase came to mean "accept the person instead of the cause" or "show partiality" (Job 13:8, 10 the American Standard Revised Version), and is so used commonly. A literal translation into Greek gave lambano prosopon (Sirach 35:13 (32:16);Luke 20:21Galatians 2:6), with the noun prosopolempsia, "face-taking" (Romans 2:11Ephesians 6:9Colossians 3:25James 2:1), rendered uniformly "respect of persons" in English Versions of the Bible. A noun prosopolemptes, "respecter of persons," and a verb prosopolempteo, are foundActs 10:34James 2:9. God's judgment rests solely on the character of the man and will be influenced by no worldly (Ephesians 6:9) or national (Romans 2:11) considerations.
