Multitude
Topical Encyclopedia
In the Bible, the term "multitude" is frequently used to describe a large group of people or a great number of individuals gathered together. This concept appears throughout both the Old and New Testaments, often signifying the presence of a significant crowd or assembly, whether for worship, witness, or other purposes.

Old Testament Usage

In the Old Testament, "multitude" often refers to the vast numbers of people, such as the Israelites or other nations. For example, inExodus 12:38, the term is used to describe the mixed multitude that accompanied the Israelites during the Exodus from Egypt: "A mixed multitude also went up with them, along with flocks and herds, a great number of livestock" . This indicates not only the Israelites but also others who joined them in their journey.

The term is also used in prophetic literature to describe the nations and peoples gathered for judgment or battle. InJoel 3:14, the prophet declares, "Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the Day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision" . Here, the multitude represents the gathering of nations for divine judgment.

New Testament Usage

In the New Testament, "multitude" frequently appears in the Gospels to describe the crowds that followed Jesus during His ministry. These multitudes were drawn by His teachings, miracles, and acts of compassion. For instance, inMatthew 14:14, it is recorded, "When He stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick" . The multitude here signifies the many who sought Jesus for healing and spiritual nourishment.

The feeding of the five thousand is another significant event involving a multitude. InJohn 6:10, Jesus instructs His disciples, "Have the people sit down," and the text notes, "There was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them" . This miracle underscores Jesus' ability to provide for the needs of a large crowd, symbolizing His sufficiency and divine provision.

Symbolic and Theological Significance

Theologically, the multitude can symbolize the vastness of God's creation and His desire for all people to come to Him. InRevelation 7:9, the Apostle John describes a vision of a great multitude in heaven: "After this I looked and saw a multitude too large to count, from every nation and tribe and people and tongue, standing before the throne and before the Lamb" . This multitude represents the redeemed from all over the world, highlighting the inclusivity of the Gospel and the ultimate gathering of believers in the presence of God.

The concept of the multitude also serves as a reminder of the mission of the Church to reach out to the masses with the message of salvation. Jesus' interactions with the multitudes during His earthly ministry exemplify His compassion and concern for all people, setting a model for Christian outreach and evangelism.

Conclusion

The term "multitude" in the Bible encompasses both literal and symbolic meanings, reflecting the physical gatherings of people as well as the spiritual gathering of believers. It serves as a testament to God's expansive love and the universal call to salvation through Jesus Christ.

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
MINGLED PEOPLE; (MIXED MULTITUDE)

min'-g'-ld pe'-pl:

(1) "Mixed multitude" occurs inNumbers 11:4 as a translation of asaphcuph, "collection," "rabble." The same phrase inExodus 12:38Nehemiah 13:3 is the rendition of erebh. "Mingled people" is used also to translate `erebh, and is found inJeremiah 25:20, 24;Jeremiah 50:37Ezekiel 30:5, and in1 Kings 10:15 the Revised Version (British and American) (the King James Version "Arabia"; compare the American Revised Version margin). In the last case both revised versions have followed the pointing of the Massoretic Text, and this pointing alone distinguishes "mingled people" (`erebh) from "Arabia" (`arabh); in the unvocalized text both words are equally `-r-b. Now "the traffic of the merchants, and of all the kings of the mingled people, and of the governors of the country" is very awkward, and the correction into "Arabia," as in the Massoretic Text (and English Versions of the Bible) of the parallel2 Chronicles 9:14, is indicated. Probably the same change should be made inEzekiel 30:5, reading "Ethiopia, and Put, and Lud, and Arabia, and Cub." A similar textual confusion seems to be responsible for either "and all the kings of Arabia" or "and all the kings of the mingled people" inJeremiah 25:24. On all these verses see the commentaries.

(2) InJeremiah 25:20;Jeremiah 50:37, "mingled people" is a term of contempt for the hybrid blood of certain of Israel's enemies. Something of this same contempt may be contained inExodus 12:38, where a multitude of non-Israelite camp-followers are mentioned as accompanying the children of Israel in the exodus, and inNumbers 11:4 it is this motley body that seduced Israel to sin. But who they were, why they wished or were permitted to join in the exodus, and what eventually became of them or of their descendants is a very perplexing puzzle. InNehemiah 13:3, the "mixed multitude" consists of the inhabitants of Palestine whom the Jews found there after the return from the exile (see SAMARIA). In accord with the command ofDeuteronomy 23:3-5, the Jews withdrew from all religious intercourse whatever had been established with these.

NOTE.-The Hebrew noun for "mingled people" may or may not be connected with the verb translated "mingle" inEzra 9:2Psalm 106:35Daniel 2:43. On this see the lexicons.
