Name and Meaning: Jeconiah, also known as Jehoiachin, is a biblical figure whose name means "Yahweh will establish." He is sometimes referred to as Coniah in the Scriptures.
Biblical References: Jeconiah is mentioned in several books of the Bible, including 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles, Jeremiah, and Matthew. His account is primarily found in
2 Kings 24:8-17,
2 Chronicles 36:9-10, and
Jeremiah 22:24-30.
Historical Context: Jeconiah was the son of Jehoiakim and the grandson of Josiah, king of Judah. He ascended to the throne at the age of eighteen and reigned for a brief period of three months and ten days in Jerusalem (
2 Chronicles 36:9). His reign occurred during a tumultuous time in Judah's history, marked by the Babylonian threat under King Nebuchadnezzar II.
Reign and Captivity: Jeconiah's reign was characterized by the continuation of the idolatrous practices that had plagued Judah. The Bible notes that he "did evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father had done" (
2 Kings 24:9). His short reign ended when Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem and took Jeconiah captive to Babylon, along with his family, officials, and many of the elite of Judah (
2 Kings 24:12-16).
Prophetic Significance: The prophet Jeremiah delivered a significant prophecy concerning Jeconiah, declaring that none of his descendants would prosper on the throne of David.
Jeremiah 22:30 states, "This is what the LORD says: 'Record this man as childless, a man who will not prosper in his lifetime. For none of his descendants will succeed in sitting on the throne of David or ruling again in Judah'" . This prophecy underscored the end of the Davidic line's direct rule over Judah during that period.
Later Life and Release: Jeconiah spent thirty-seven years in Babylonian captivity. However, his fortunes changed when Evil-Merodach, the successor of Nebuchadnezzar, released him from prison and treated him with favor.
2 Kings 25:27-30 records that Jeconiah was given a seat of honor above other captive kings and received a regular allowance for the rest of his life.
Genealogical Importance: Despite the curse pronounced by Jeremiah, Jeconiah's lineage is significant in the genealogy of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 1:11-12 includes Jeconiah in the genealogy of Jesus, highlighting the fulfillment of God's promises through the line of David, despite the apparent obstacles.
Theological Implications: Jeconiah's life and the prophecies concerning him illustrate themes of judgment and mercy. His captivity served as a divine judgment for the sins of Judah, yet his eventual release and inclusion in the Messianic line demonstrate God's enduring faithfulness and the unfolding of His redemptive plan.
