Former
Topical Encyclopedia
The term "former" is often used in the Bible to denote something that has come before or something that is past. It can refer to previous events, conditions, or states of being, and is frequently used to contrast with what is new or current. In the context of Scripture, "former" can have both literal and metaphorical implications, often highlighting the transformative work of God in the lives of individuals and nations.

Old Testament Usage

In the Old Testament, "former" is used to describe past events or conditions, often in the context of God's redemptive history. For example, inIsaiah 43:18-19 , the prophet declares, "Do not call to mind the former things; pay no attention to the things of old. Behold, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert." Here, the "former things" refer to past events that God encourages His people to move beyond, as He is about to do something new and transformative.

The term is also used in the context of God's creation and His mighty acts. InIsaiah 46:9 , God reminds His people, "Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me." This passage calls the Israelites to remember God's past deeds as a foundation for trusting in His future promises.

New Testament Usage

In the New Testament, "former" often refers to a previous way of life before coming to faith in Christ.Ephesians 4:22 instructs believers, "to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires." This highlights the transformation that occurs when one becomes a follower of Christ, leaving behind the old, sinful nature and embracing a new life in Him.

Similarly, inPhilippians 3:13 , the Apostle Paul writes, "Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead." Here, Paul emphasizes the importance of moving beyond former achievements or failures to pursue the calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Theological Implications

The concept of "former" in the Bible underscores the transformative power of God. It serves as a reminder of the past while pointing towards the hope and renewal found in God's promises. The "former things" often represent a state of sin, bondage, or incomplete understanding, which are overcome through God's intervention and the work of Christ.

In prophetic literature, the contrast between former and new things often signifies the coming of God's kingdom and the fulfillment of His promises. This theme is prevalent in the writings of the prophets, who frequently call the people to look beyond their current circumstances to the new work God is doing.

Practical Application

For believers, the concept of "former" encourages a forward-looking faith that acknowledges past experiences but does not remain bound by them. It calls Christians to embrace the new identity and life offered through Jesus Christ, leaving behind the old self and its ways. This transformation is both a one-time event at conversion and an ongoing process of sanctification, as believers grow in their relationship with God and become more like Christ.

In summary, the term "former" in the Bible serves as a powerful reminder of God's redemptive work throughout history and in the lives of individuals. It calls believers to remember God's past faithfulness while eagerly anticipating the new things He is doing in their lives and in the world.

FORMER

for'-mer:

The word in the sense of "maker," "framer," occurs only inJeremiah 51:19, "He is the former (from yatsar, "to form") of all things." The adjective, in the sense of preceding in the order of time, is commonly in Hob the translation of ri'shon, "first," "foremost" (Genesis 40:13Numbers 21:26Deuteronomy 24:4, etc.); in Greek of proteros (Ephesians 4:22Hebrews 10:321 Peter 1:14); and in two cases (Acts 1:1Revelation 21:4) of protos, where the Revised Version (British and American) has (in Acts in the margin) "the first." As denoting place or position the word occurs in the Old Testament inZechariah 14:8, "the former sea" as translation of qadhmoni, "in front," where the Revised Version (British and American) has "eastern," i.e. the Dead Sea, in contrast with the Mediterranean, or western sea (compareEzekiel 47:18Joel 2:20). For "former iniquities" (Psalm 79:8) the Revised Version (British and American) has simply "the iniquities"; Other changes may be seen inNumbers 6:12Isaiah 65:7Ezekiel 36:11Micah 4:8Haggai 2:3.
