Floor
Topical Encyclopedia
In biblical times, the term "floor" often refers to a threshing floor, a significant agricultural and social site in ancient Israelite culture. Threshing floors were open, flat areas where harvested grain was separated from the chaff. These locations were typically situated on elevated ground to take advantage of the wind, which would carry away the lighter chaff when the grain was tossed into the air.

Threshing Floor in Scripture

Threshing floors are mentioned numerous times throughout the Bible, serving both practical and symbolic purposes. One of the most notable references is found in the account of Ruth and Boaz. Ruth, a Moabite widow, approaches Boaz at the threshing floor, seeking his protection and invoking the levirate marriage custom (Ruth 3:6-9). This event is pivotal in the lineage of King David and, ultimately, Jesus Christ.

Another significant mention is the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, which King David purchased to build an altar to the LORD. This site later became the location for Solomon's Temple (2 Samuel 24:18-25;1 Chronicles 21:18-30). The purchase of the threshing floor underscores the importance of sacrifice and obedience to God.

Symbolism and Spiritual Significance

Threshing floors in the Bible often symbolize judgment and purification. The process of separating grain from chaff is metaphorically used to describe God's judgment, where the righteous are distinguished from the wicked. InMatthew 3:12, John the Baptist speaks of Jesus, saying, "His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and to gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

The imagery of the threshing floor also conveys themes of provision and blessing. It is a place where the fruits of labor are gathered and prepared for use, reflecting God's provision for His people. InJoel 2:24, the prophet speaks of a time of restoration, saying, "The threshing floors will be full of grain, and the vats will overflow with new wine and oil."

Cultural and Historical Context

Threshing floors were central to the agrarian lifestyle of ancient Israel. They were communal spaces where families and neighbors gathered during the harvest season. The social aspect of the threshing floor is evident in the account of Ruth, where the community plays a role in the unfolding of God's plan.

In addition to their agricultural function, threshing floors were sometimes used for legal and ceremonial purposes. The public nature of these spaces made them suitable for gatherings and important transactions, as seen in the account of David's purchase of Araunah's threshing floor.

Conclusion

The concept of the floor, particularly the threshing floor, is rich with meaning in the biblical narrative. It serves as a backdrop for significant events and teachings, illustrating themes of judgment, provision, and community. Through these references, the Bible reveals the multifaceted role of the threshing floor in the spiritual and daily life of God's people.

NACON, THE THRESHING FLOOR OF

na'-kon, (nakhon; the King James Version Nachon): The place where Uzzah was smitten for putting forth his hand to steady the ark, hence, called afterward "Perezuzzah" (2 Samuel 6:8); in the parallel passage (1 Chronicles 13:9) we have kidhon, and in Josephus (Ant., VII, iv, 2) Cheidon. In1 Samuel 23:23 the word nakhon occurs, and is translated "of a certainty," margin "with the certainty" or "to a set place"; also in1 Samuel 26:4 it is translated "of a certainty," margin "to a set place." It is uncertain whether in1 Samuel 6:6 it is a place-name at all; and no successful attempt has been made to identify either Nacon or Chidon; possibly they are both personal names.
