Feeble
Topical Encyclopedia
The term "feeble" in the Bible often refers to physical weakness, frailty, or lack of strength. It is used both literally and metaphorically to describe individuals, nations, or spiritual conditions. The concept of feebleness is significant in understanding human limitations and the need for divine strength and support.

Old Testament Usage

In the Old Testament, "feeble" is frequently used to describe physical weakness or vulnerability. For instance, inGenesis 33:13, Jacob speaks of the "feeble" condition of his children and livestock, indicating their inability to endure a harsh journey: "But Jacob replied, 'My lord knows that the children are weak, and I must care for the nursing flocks and herds. If they are driven hard for a single day, all the animals will die.'" .

The term also appears in the context of warfare and national strength. InIsaiah 35:3, the prophet encourages the people of Israel to strengthen the feeble hands and steady the knees that give way, symbolizing a call to courage and resilience: "Strengthen the limp hands and steady the feeble knees." .

New Testament Usage

In the New Testament, "feeble" is used to describe both physical and spiritual weakness. In1 Corinthians 12:22, Paul uses the term to illustrate the value of every member of the body of Christ, emphasizing that even those who seem weaker are indispensable: "On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable." .

The concept of feebleness is also evident in the spiritual realm, where human weakness is contrasted with divine strength. In2 Corinthians 12:9, Paul recounts the Lord's response to his plea for relief from a "thorn in the flesh": "But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me." . Here, feebleness becomes an opportunity for God's power to be displayed.

Theological Implications

The biblical portrayal of feebleness underscores the human condition of dependency on God. It serves as a reminder of the limitations inherent in human nature and the necessity of relying on divine strength. The acknowledgment of one's own feebleness is often a precursor to experiencing God's power and grace.

In the broader biblical narrative, feebleness is not merely a state to be overcome but a condition through which God can work. The Bible consistently teaches that God's strength is made perfect in human weakness, inviting believers to trust in His provision and power rather than their own abilities.

Practical Application

For believers, recognizing feebleness can lead to a deeper reliance on God and a more profound experience of His grace. It encourages humility and a posture of dependence, fostering a spiritual environment where God's strength can be manifest. The biblical call to strengthen the feeble hands and knees serves as an exhortation to support one another within the community of faith, ensuring that all members are upheld and valued.

FEEBLE KNEES

fe'-b'-l nez: The expression. is found in three places (one being a free quotation of another):Job 4:4, "Thou hast made firm the feeble (kara`, "bending," "bowing") knees," andHebrews 12:12, "Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied (the King James Version "feeble") knees." The Greek word used here (paralelumena, "paralyzed," "motionless") implies the loss of junction, interrupted articulation, the cutting off of vital strength; compare Greek cholos, "lame," and see Delitzsch in his Commentary on Heb, in the place cited

Such an affection of the knees may be due to different causes. It is, e.g., a very frequent symptom of the disease known in the Orient as beriberi, when the muscles of the lower leg shrink to such a degree as to render voluntary locomotion impossible. It always disables its victim, and is therefore often expressive of general debility, e.g. inPsalm 109:24, where such weakness is described as the outcome of protracted fasting inEzekiel 7:17 and 21:7, "All knees shall be weak as water," the expression indicates a complete relaxation of the muscles. Fear effected the same condition in Belshazzar's case, when he saw the writing on the wall (Daniel 5:6), "The joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another" (compareNahum 2:10).

The "sore boil. in the knees, and in the legs," a disease announced inDeuteronomy 28:35 as a punishment upon Israel for disobedience, cannot now be fully determined. Driver (in his commentary on the passage) thinks of elephantiasis, which is possible but not probable on account of the additional statement, "whereof thou canst not be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the crown of thy head" which would be unexplained, as elephantiasis rarely presents a form in which the whole body is sympathetically affected. I rather think of some form of bubonic plague, which causes very high fever all over the body. InDeuteronomy 28:27 in the enumeration of plagues mention is made of the "boil of Egypt," and some commentators have explained this as "bubonic plague." There is, however, no doubt that the "boil or botch of Egypt" is identical with the disease known to modern medicine as bouton du Nil, Biskra button, Bagdad or Aleppo sore.
