Destruction
Topical Encyclopedia
Definition and General Understanding:
Destruction in the biblical context often refers to the act of complete ruin or annihilation, whether it be physical, spiritual, or moral. It is a theme that appears throughout Scripture, illustrating the consequences of sin, the judgment of God, and the ultimate fate of the wicked. Destruction can be both temporal and eternal, affecting individuals, nations, and the created order.

Old Testament References:
In the Old Testament, destruction is frequently associated with divine judgment. The Hebrew word often translated as "destruction" is "שָׁחַת" (shachat), which conveys the idea of corruption or ruin. For instance, inGenesis 6:13, God declares His intention to destroy all flesh due to the earth's corruption: "Then God said to Noah, 'The end of all living creatures has come before Me, because through them the earth is filled with violence; now behold, I will destroy them along with the earth.'" .

The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah serves as a vivid example of God's judgment against sin (Genesis 19:24-25). The prophets frequently warned Israel and surrounding nations of impending destruction due to their disobedience and idolatry.Isaiah 13:6 proclaims, "Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come as destruction from the Almighty." .

New Testament References:
In the New Testament, destruction is often linked to the final judgment and the fate of the ungodly. The Greek word "ἀπώλεια" (apōleia) is commonly used, signifying ruin or loss. Jesus warns of the broad path leading to destruction inMatthew 7:13: "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it." .

The Apostle Paul speaks of destruction in the context of eternal separation from God. In2 Thessalonians 1:9, he writes, "They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His might." . This underscores the seriousness of rejecting the gospel and the eternal consequences that follow.

Theological Implications:
Destruction serves as a sobering reminder of the holiness and justice of God. It highlights the reality of sin and the necessity of repentance and faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. The Bible consistently presents destruction as the ultimate end for those who persist in rebellion against God, contrasting it with the promise of eternal life for believers.

Symbolism and Imagery:
Biblical imagery of destruction often includes fire, flood, and warfare, symbolizing the totality and inevitability of God's judgment. The destruction of the world by flood in Noah's time (Genesis 6-9) and the future destruction by fire (2 Peter 3:7) serve as bookends to the biblical narrative, emphasizing God's sovereign control over creation and history.

Practical Application:
Believers are called to live in light of the reality of destruction, both in terms of personal holiness and evangelistic urgency. The knowledge of impending judgment should motivate Christians to share the gospel, warning others of the consequences of sin and pointing them to the hope found in Christ. As Paul exhorts in1 Thessalonians 5:9, "For God has not appointed us to suffer wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ." .

InJob 26:6, 28:22 (Hebrews abaddon) is sheol, the realm of the dead.

Destruction, City of

(Isaiah 19:18; Hebrews Ir-ha-Heres, "city of overthrow, " because of the evidence it would present of the overthrow of heathenism), the ideal title of On or Heliopolis (q.v.).

Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1. (n.) The act of destroying; a tearing down; a bringing to naught; subversion; demolition; ruin; slaying; devastation.

2. (n.) The state of being destroyed, demolished, ruined, slain, or devastated.

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
CITY OF DESTRUCTION

de-struk'-shun `ir ha-herec; (Septuagint Base-dek): In his prediction of the future return of Egypt to Yahweh, Isaiah declares, "In that day there shall be five cities in the land of Egypt that speak the language of Canaan, and swear to Yahweh of hosts; one shall be called The city of destruction" (Isaiah 19:18). The name `ir ha-herec, "the city of overthrow," is evidently a play upon `ir ha-cherec, "city of the sun," a designation of Heliopolis (same meaning; compare the name for this city, Beth-shemesh,Jeremiah 43:13), in Egyptian, On (Genesis 41:45), which last name Ezekiel, by a similar play on sound, changes into Aven. SeeON. Some codices, however, as the Revised Version, margin notes, read here `ir ha-cherec, the actual name of the city.

DESTRUCTION

de-struk'-shun: In the King James Version this word translates over 30 Hebrew words in the Old Testament, and 4 words in the New Testament. Of these the most interesting, as having a technical sense, is 'abhaddon (from verb 'abhadh, "to be lost," "to perish"). It is found 6 times in the Wisdom Literature, and nowhere else in the Old Testament; compareRevelation 9:11. SeeABADDON.

DESTRUCTION, CITY OF; HELIOPOLIS or CITY OF THE SUN (Isaiah 19:18). SeeASTRONOMY, sec. I, 2; IR-HA-HERES; ON.
