Bound
Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of being "bound" in the Bible carries both literal and metaphorical meanings, often signifying physical restraint, spiritual bondage, or covenantal obligations. The term appears in various contexts throughout Scripture, illustrating the multifaceted nature of bondage and freedom in the biblical narrative.

Physical Restraint

In its literal sense, "bound" frequently refers to physical restraint or imprisonment. For instance, the Apostle Paul often found himself bound in chains due to his missionary work and proclamation of the Gospel. InActs 21:33, it is recorded, "The commander came up and arrested him and ordered that he be bound with two chains." This physical binding serves as a testament to the trials faced by early Christians and their perseverance in faith despite persecution.

Spiritual Bondage

Metaphorically, being bound can refer to spiritual bondage or the enslavement of sin. Jesus speaks of this inJohn 8:34, saying, "Truly, truly, I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin." Here, the concept of being bound is not physical but spiritual, indicating the hold that sin can have over an individual's life. The New Testament frequently addresses the liberation from such bondage through Christ's redemptive work, as seen inRomans 6:18: "You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness."

Covenantal Obligations

The term "bound" also appears in the context of covenantal obligations and vows. InNumbers 30:2, the importance of keeping one's word is emphasized: "When a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he must not break his word; he must do everything he has promised." This underscores the seriousness with which God views promises and the binding nature of covenants made before Him.

Binding and Loosing

A significant theological concept related to being bound is the authority given to the Church in matters of binding and loosing. InMatthew 16:19, Jesus tells Peter, "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." This passage has been interpreted to mean the authority to make decisions in church discipline and doctrine, reflecting the responsibility and power entrusted to the Church.

Bound in Love and Unity

The idea of being bound is also used positively in Scripture to describe unity and love among believers.Colossians 3:14 states, "And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity." Here, love is depicted as a binding force that holds the community of believers together, promoting harmony and mutual support.

Conclusion

The biblical concept of being "bound" encompasses a range of meanings, from physical imprisonment to spiritual and moral obligations. It highlights the human condition of bondage to sin and the liberating power of Christ, as well as the responsibilities and unity found within the Christian community. Through these various uses, Scripture provides a comprehensive understanding of what it means to be bound and the freedom offered through faith in Jesus Christ.

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
BIND; BOUND

bind (deo): There are a number of Hebrew words used to express this word in its various meanings, 'alam (Genesis 37:7), 'acar (Genesis 42:24), qashar (Deuteronomy 6:8). It sometimes means "to attach," "to fasten" (Exodus 28:28Deuteronomy 14:25). It was used also with reference to an agreement in a judicial sense (Numbers 30:2, 3), or to make one a prisoner (Judges 16:10Psalm 149:8). It means also "to control" (Job 38:31).

Figurative: In a figurative sense, to bind heavy and burdensome (extra) so-called religious duties on men (Matthew 23:4). This figurative use of the word inMatthew 16:19 and 18:18 has given special interest to it. Necessarily certain powers for administration must be conferred on this company of men to carry out the purpose of Christ. That this power was not conferred on Peter alone is evident from the fact that inMatthew 18:18 it is conferred on all the apostles. The use of the word in the New Testament is to declare a thing to be binding or obligatory (John 20:23). In this sense this authority is used by some denominations in the service in preparation for the Lord's Supper, in which after the confession of sin by the people the ministers say, "I declare to you who have sincerely repented of your sins and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ the entire forgiveness of your sins." This statement is followed by the further declaration that if any have not so repented God will not forgive them, but will retain them and call them to account. The claim of the church of Rome that these statements of our Lord confer on the priests and bishops, or primarily on the pope, the power to retain or forgive sins, is without historical validity and does violence to the Scriptures.
