In biblical terminology, the concept of a "blemish" holds significant theological and ritualistic importance, particularly in the context of the Old Testament. The term is often used to describe physical imperfections that disqualify individuals or animals from participating in certain religious rites and offerings. The Hebrew word for blemish is "mum" (מוּם), which denotes a defect or imperfection.

Old Testament Context

1.Sacrificial Offerings: The Law of Moses explicitly required that sacrificial animals be without blemish. This requirement underscored the need for purity and perfection in offerings made to God. InLeviticus 22:21, it is stated, "When a man presents a peace offering to the LORD to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering from the herd or flock, it must be without blemish to be acceptable; there must be no defect in it." This stipulation is repeated in various forms throughout the Pentateuch, emphasizing the holiness and sanctity required in worship.

2.Priestly Qualifications: The priests, who served as mediators between God and the people, were also required to be without physical blemish.Leviticus 21:17-23 outlines the qualifications for the priesthood, stating that no descendant of Aaron with a defect may approach to offer the food of his God. This requirement symbolized the need for spiritual and physical purity in those who served in the tabernacle and later the temple.

3.Symbolism of Perfection: The insistence on offerings and priests being without blemish serves as a symbol of the perfection and holiness of God. It reflects the biblical theme that God is perfect and requires perfection in those who approach Him. This concept is further developed in the New Testament, where Christ is described as the perfect, unblemished sacrifice.

New Testament Fulfillment

1.Christ as the Unblemished Lamb: The New Testament presents Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of the Old Testament sacrificial system. He is described as the "Lamb of God" who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). In1 Peter 1:19, Christ is referred to as "a lamb without blemish or spot," highlighting His sinlessness and suitability as the ultimate sacrifice for humanity's sins.

2.Spiritual Application: The concept of being without blemish is also applied to the spiritual lives of believers.Ephesians 5:27 speaks of Christ's desire to present the Church to Himself "in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but holy and blameless." This reflects the transformative work of Christ in sanctifying His people, making them spiritually pure and acceptable before God.

Theological Implications

The requirement for offerings and priests to be without blemish in the Old Testament, and the fulfillment of this requirement in Christ, underscores the biblical theme of holiness. It illustrates the separation between the divine and the profane and the need for atonement and purification. The concept of blemish serves as a reminder of the fallen state of humanity and the necessity of divine intervention through Christ to restore the relationship between God and His creation.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
Imperfection or bodily deformity excluding men from the priesthood, and rendering animals unfit to be offered in sacrifice (Leviticus 21:17-23;22:19-25). The Christian church, as justified in Christ, is "without blemish" (Ephesians 5:27). Christ offered himself a sacrifice "without blemish," acceptable to God (1 Peter 1:19).
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1. (v. t.) To mark with deformity; to injure or impair, to mar, or make defective, either the body or mind.

2. (v. t.) To tarnish, as reputation or character; to defame.

3. (n.) Any mark of deformity or injury, whether physical or moral; anything that diminishes beauty, or renders imperfect that which is otherwise well formed; that which impairs reputation.

BLEMISH

blem'-ish:

(1) mum, me'um; momos: This word signifies no particular skin disease, as has been supposed; but is used generally for any and all disfiguring affections of the skin, such as eczema, herpes, scabies, etc., even for scratches and scars, as inLeviticus 24:19, 20; and thence for moral defects, as inEphesians 5:27. The existence of a blemish in a person of priestly descent prevented him from the execution of the priestly office; similarly an animal fit for sacrifice was to be without blemish. In the New Testament Christ is presented as the antitype of a pure and ritually acceptable sacrifice "as a lamb without blemish and without spot" (Hebrews 9:141 Peter 1:19), and the disciples are admonished to be blameless, "without blemish" (Ephesians 5:27). Rarely the word is used to designate a reprobate person (2 Peter 2:13).

(2) Blemish in the eye, tebhallul (from a root balal, "to overflow"; Arabic balla, balal, "to moisten"), cataract, white spots in the eye (Leviticus 21:20).
