Appearance
Topical Encyclopedia
In the Bible, the concept of appearance encompasses both physical appearance and the deeper, spiritual significance of how individuals present themselves before God and others. The Scriptures provide numerous insights into how appearance is perceived and valued in the eyes of God, often contrasting it with human judgment.

Physical Appearance

The Bible acknowledges physical appearance but consistently emphasizes that it is not the ultimate measure of a person's worth or character. In1 Samuel 16:7, when Samuel is sent to anoint a new king from among Jesse's sons, God instructs him, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart" . This passage highlights the divine perspective that prioritizes inner qualities over external looks.

Similarly, in the New Testament,1 Peter 3:3-4 advises women, "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment such as braided hair or gold jewelry or fine clothes, but from the inner disposition of your heart, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight" . This teaching underscores the value of inner beauty and character over physical adornment.

Spiritual Appearance

The Bible also addresses the spiritual aspect of appearance, particularly in terms of how believers are to present themselves in holiness and righteousness. InRomans 12:1-2, Paul urges believers to offer their bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, and to be transformed by the renewing of their minds. This transformation affects not only the inner self but also how one appears in conduct and demeanor.

Moreover, the concept of being clothed in righteousness is a recurring theme.Isaiah 61:10 states, "I will rejoice greatly in the LORD; my soul will exult in my God. For He has clothed me with garments of salvation and wrapped me in a robe of righteousness" . This imagery conveys the idea that spiritual appearance, marked by righteousness and salvation, is of utmost importance.

Judgment Based on Appearance

The Bible warns against making judgments based solely on appearance.James 2:1-4 admonishes believers not to show favoritism, particularly in the context of wealth and social status, stating, "My brothers, as you hold out your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, do not show favoritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. If you lavish attention on the man in fine clothes and say, 'Here is a seat of honor,' but say to the poor man, 'You must stand,' or, 'Sit at my feet,' have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?" . This passage emphasizes the need for impartiality and the recognition of intrinsic value beyond outward appearances.

Christ's Appearance

The appearance of Christ, both in His earthly ministry and in His glorified state, holds significant theological implications.Isaiah 53:2-3 prophetically describes the Messiah's humble appearance: "He had no stately form or majesty to attract us, no beauty that we should desire Him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief" . This portrayal underscores the humility and suffering of Christ, contrasting with worldly expectations of grandeur.

In contrast, the glorified Christ inRevelation 1:13-16 is depicted with a majestic and awe-inspiring appearance: "and among the lampstands was One like the Son of Man, dressed in a long robe, with a golden sash around His chest. The hair of His head was white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes were like a blazing fire. His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and His voice was like the roar of many waters" . This vision reveals the divine authority and glory of the risen Christ.

In summary, the Bible presents a nuanced view of appearance, urging believers to prioritize inner character and spiritual integrity over external appearances, while also recognizing the transformative power of God's righteousness in shaping how one is perceived both by God and others.

APPEARANCE

a-per'-ans (mar'eh; chiefly used of the mystic and supernatural visions of Ezekiel and Daniel): A semblance, as of lightning, wheels, sapphire stone (Ezekiel 1:14, 16, 26); Gabriel's overpowering revelation (Daniel 8:15; see alsoDaniel 10:6, 18). In the New Testament refers exclusively, through three Greek words, prosopon, "sight," "countenance," to "outward appearance" (2 Corinthians 10:7 the King James Version); and its possibly deceptive nature: opsis, "Judge not according to appearance." (John 7:24); "them that glory in appearance." (2 Corinthians 5:12; compare1 Samuel 16:7). See also1 Thessalonians 2:12, the English Revised Version, margin (eidos = "sight").
