Able
Topical Encyclopedia
Introduction:
Able is a significant figure in the Bible, known primarily for his role in the early Genesis narrative. He is the second son of Adam and Eve and is recognized for his righteous character and tragic death at the hands of his brother, Cain. His account is foundational in understanding themes of faith, sacrifice, and the consequences of sin.

Biblical Account:
The account of Able is found inGenesis 4:1-10. Able is described as a shepherd, tending to flocks, while his brother Cain is a farmer, working the soil. The narrative highlights the offerings made by both brothers to the Lord. Able's offering, consisting of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions, is accepted by God, whereas Cain's offering of the fruits of the soil is not. This acceptance of Able's offering is attributed to his faith and righteousness.

Genesis 4:4 : "And Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering."

Faith and Righteousness:
Able is often cited as an exemplar of faith. His offering is seen as a demonstration of his trust and reverence for God. The New Testament further emphasizes Able's faith. InHebrews 11:4 , it is written, "By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God gave approval to his gifts. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead."

The First Murder:
The acceptance of Able's offering and the rejection of Cain's leads to jealousy and anger in Cain. Despite God's warning to Cain about sin's desire to control him, Cain invites Able to the field and kills him, committing the first murder recorded in the Bible. This act of fratricide marks a significant moment in the narrative of human sin and its repercussions.

Genesis 4:8 : "Then Cain said to his brother Abel, 'Let us go out to the field.' And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him."

Divine Justice:
Following the murder, God confronts Cain, asking about Able's whereabouts. Cain's infamous response, "Am I my brother's keeper?" highlights his defiance and lack of remorse. God declares that Able's blood cries out from the ground, signifying the need for justice and the seriousness of Cain's sin.

Genesis 4:10 : "What have you done?" replied the LORD. "The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground."

Legacy:
Able's legacy is one of faithfulness and righteousness. His account serves as a cautionary tale about the destructive power of sin and the importance of offering one's best to God. Able is remembered in the New Testament as a righteous man whose faith continues to speak to believers, encouraging them to live lives of integrity and devotion to God.

ABLE

a'-b'-l: The Greek dunamai, "to have power," may refer either to inherent strength, or to the absence of in external obstacles, or to what may be allowable or permitted. The Greek ischuo, as inLuke 13:24John 21:6, refers always to the first of the above meanings. The use of the word as an adjective the King James Version of2 Corinthians 3:6, is misleading, and has been properly changed in the Revised Version (British and American) into "sufficient as ministers," i.e. "hath fitted us to be ministers."
