but He loves those who pursue righteousness
In contrast to His detestation of wickedness, God shows love and favor to those who actively seek righteousness. The pursuit of righteousness is a recurring theme in Scripture, highlighting the importance of aligning one's life with God's standards. This phrase also points to the transformative power of God's love, which enables believers to grow in holiness. The ultimate fulfillment of righteousness is found in Jesus Christ, who embodies perfect righteousness and offers it to believers through faith, as seen inRomans 3:21-22.

Proverbs 15:9 begins by anchoring the entire verse in the person of God: “The LORD….”

• The personal covenant name (YHWH) reminds us of His unchanging, self-existent nature (Malachi 3:6).

• Because He is holy (Isaiah 6:3) and perfectly righteous (Psalm 145:17), His view of human conduct is the decisive standard.

• Every moral judgment that follows rests on His character; He is not an observer but the ultimate Authority who “examines the righteous” (Psalm 11:4-5).

“…detests…” speaks of an intense, settled opposition.

• This is not mild displeasure but holy revulsion (Proverbs 6:16-19 lists other objects of His hatred).

• God’s hatred is righteous, never capricious; it flows from His purity (Habakkuk 1:13).

• When Scripture states that God “detests,” it warns that sin invites certain, deserved judgment (Romans 1:18).

The focus is on a pathway, a habitual pattern rather than a single act.

• “Way” in Proverbs describes lifestyle choices (Proverbs 4:18-19).

The “wicked” are those who live in stubborn rebellion.

He loathes the entrenched rebellion of the wicked, yet He delights in and showers favor on all who actively chase after what honors Him. The verse calls us to examine our direction, abandon the road He detests, and wholeheartedly pursue the righteousness He loves.
