Solomon’s Proverbs: The Wise Son
1The proverbs of Solomon:
A wise son brings joy to his father,
but a foolish son grief to his mother.
2Ill-gotten treasures profit nothing,
but righteousness brings deliverance from death.
3The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry,
but He denies the craving of the wicked.
4Idle hands make one poor,
but diligent hands bring wealth.
5He who gathers in summer is a wise son,
but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
6Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.a
7The memory of the righteous is a blessing,
but the name of the wicked will rot.
8A wise heart will receive commandments,
but foolish lips will come to ruin.
9He who walks in integrity walks securely,
but he who perverts his ways will be found out.
10He who winks the eye causes grief,
and foolish lips will come to ruin.b
11The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
12Hatred stirs up dissension,
but love covers all transgressions.c
13Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning,
but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment.
14The wise store up knowledge,
but the mouth of the fool invites destruction.
15The wealth of the rich man is his fortified city,
but poverty is the ruin of the poor.
16The labor of the righteous leads to life,
but the gain of the wicked brings punishment.
17Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,
but he who ignores reproof goes astray.
18The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
and whoever spreads slander is a fool.
19When words are many, sin is unavoidable,
but he who restrains his lips is wise.
20The tongue of the righteous is choice silver,
but the heart of the wicked has little worth.
21The lips of the righteous feed many,
but fools die for lack of judgment.
22The blessing of the LORD enriches,
and He adds no sorrow to it.
23The fool delights in shameful conduct,
but a man of understanding has wisdom.
24What the wicked man dreads will overtake him,
but the desire of the righteous will be granted.
25When the whirlwind passes, the wicked are no more,
but the righteous are secure forever.
26Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
so is the slacker to those who send him.
27The fear of the LORD prolongs life,
but the years of the wicked will be cut short.
28The hope of the righteous is joy,
but the expectations of the wicked will perish.
29The way of the LORD is a refuge to the upright,
but destruction awaits those who do evil.
30The righteous will never be shaken,
but the wicked will not inhabit the land.
31The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,
but a perverse tongue will be cut out.
32The lips of the righteous know what is fitting,
but the mouth of the wicked is perverse.

Proverbs 10 Summary
The Wise SonVerses 1–5 – Wisdom, Foolishness, and Work
Solomon opens this new section of the book with rapid-fire contrasts. “A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother” (v. 1). The household feels the weight of a child’s choices. Diligent hands gather during harvest and secure provision (v. 5), while slack hands waste opportunity (v. 4) and invite poverty.
Verses 6–11 – Blessing and Speech
Blessings “crown the head of the righteous” (v. 6), whereas violence lurks behind the words of the wicked. Mouths become storehouses: the righteous guard their words, but the wicked are undone by careless lips (vv. 8–11).
Verses 12–17 – Love, Hatred, and Correction
“Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all transgressions” (v. 12). The tongue can either keep conflict alive or smother it with grace. Accepting discipline (vv. 13, 17) marks the path of life; rejecting reproof endangers community and soul alike.
Verses 18–21 – The Power of Words
Hidden hatred and rash speech are twin dangers (v. 18). “When words are many, sin is unavoidable” (v. 19). In contrast, the tongue of the righteous is “choice silver” and “feeds many” (vv. 20–21), enriching others instead of draining them.
Verses 22–25 – Security from the LORD
“The blessing of the LORD enriches, and He adds no sorrow to it” (v. 22). Those who chase evil gain fleeting thrills and looming dread (vv. 23–24). Righteous people outlast the storm; the wicked vanish like a bad dream (v. 25).
Verse 26 – The Annoyance of Laziness
“Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is a slacker to those who send him.” Laziness is not neutral—it irritates and incapacitates those who depend on the lazy worker.
Verses 27–30 – Longevity and Stability
“The fear of the LORD prolongs life” (v. 27). Wicked days are cut short, their hopes crumble, and they have no enduring dwelling. The righteous, by contrast, stand firm and unshaken (vv. 28–30).
Verses 31–32 – The Mouth Reveals the Heart
“The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom” (v. 31). Their speech is fit, timely, gracious. Wicked lips, however, are severed from influence, for their words serve no good purpose.
Proverbs 10 serves as a remarkable and profound exposition of the sharp contrast between the consequences of wisdom and folly, righteousness and wickedness, diligence and laziness. It presents the reader with a vivid picture of the outcomes of various life choices, guiding them towards the path of righteousness and wisdom.
Literary Flow and Background
Chapters 1–9 of Proverbs present extended lessons, often in essay form. Beginning at 10:1, the book shifts to concise, two-line maxims. Hebrew poetry uses parallelism: the second line amplifies, contrasts, or completes the first. Out of thirty-two verses here, twenty-nine use the adversative “but,” highlighting the stark divide between righteousness and wickedness.
Thematic Threads Running Through Chapter 10
1. Family Impact: v. 1 echoesExodus 20:12; children’s conduct either honors or wounds parents.
2. Work Ethic: vv. 4–5 pair with2 Thessalonians 3:10—“If anyone is unwilling to work, he shall not eat.”
3. Speech: over one-third of the verses address the tongue, preparing the ground forJames 3.
4. Divine Blessing: v. 22 notes that true prosperity is rooted in God, not in scheming (cf.Psalm 127:1–2).
5. Longevity vs. Shortened Days: v. 27 aligns withDeuteronomy 5:16 andEphesians 6:3.

From Solomon’s World: Historical and Archaeological Insights
• Harvest imagery (v. 5): Excavations at Gezer show stone threshing floors and storage silos from Solomon’s era, underscoring the importance of timely gathering.
• “Vinegar to the teeth” (v. 26): Ancient vinegar, a wine by-product, had an acid content that could etch enamel—an everyday annoyance every farmer understood.
• Storm metaphor (v. 25): In Israel’s hill country, winter rains produce sudden flash floods; wadis fill, houses built on poor foundations wash away, mirroring Jesus’ parable inMatthew 7:24–27.
Practical Counsel for Today
• Make diligence a habit: schedule, rise early, finish tasks (Colossians 3:23).
• Limit words: practice the “pause and pray” method before speaking (Proverbs 17:27).
• Cover offenses: choose deliberate forgiveness, citing1 Peter 4:8.
• Seek lasting wealth: prioritize integrity over quick gain; remember1 Timothy 6:6–10.
• Cultivate reverence: daily Scripture reading, thankful prayer, and obedience are the building blocks of the fear of the LORD.
Links to the Wider Canon
–Proverbs 10 and the Sermon on the Mount both contrast wise and foolish builders (Matthew 7).

– The longevity promise (v. 27) resurfaces inEphesians 6:2–3, tying family honor to life span.
