1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

1Ἰησοῦς δὲ ἐπορεύθη εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαιῶν

2Early in the morning He went back into the temple courts. All the people came to Him, and He sat down to teach them.

2Ὄρθρου δὲ πάλιν παρεγένετο εἰς τὸ ἱερόν καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ καθίσας ἐδίδασκεν αὐτούς

3The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before them

3ἄγουσιν*δὲ οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι 〈πρὸς αὐτὸν〉γυναῖκα ἐπὶ*μοιχείᾳ κατειλημμένην καὶ στήσαντες αὐτὴν ἐν μέσῳ

4and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.

4λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Διδάσκαλε αὕτη ἡ γυνὴ κατείληπται*ἐπ’*αυτοφώρῳ*μοιχευομένη

5In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such a woman. So what do You say?”

5ἐν δὲ τῷ νόμῳ Μωϋσῆς*ἡμῖν ἐνετείλατο τὰς τοιαύτας λιθάζειν*σὺ οὖν τί λέγεις

6They said this to test Him, in order to have a basis for accusing Him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with His finger.

6Τοῦτο δὲ ἔλεγον πειράζοντες αὐτόν ἵνα ἔχωσιν*κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς κάτω κύψας τῷ δακτύλῳ κατέγραφεν*εἰς τὴν γῆν

7When they continued to question Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.”

7Ὡς δὲ ἐπέμενον ἐρωτῶντες αὐτόν [ἀνέκυψεν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς]Ὁ ἀναμάρτητος ὑμῶν πρῶτος 〈τὸν〉λίθον «ἐπ’αὐτῇ βαλέτω»

8And again He bent down and wrote on the ground.

8καὶ πάλιν κάτω¦κύψας ἔγραφεν εἰς τὴν γῆν

9When they heard this, they began to go away one by one, beginning with the older ones, until only Jesus was left, with the woman standing there.

9Οἱ δὲ ἀκούσαντες 〈καὶ ὑπὸ τῆς συνειδήσεως ἐλεγχόμενοι〉ἐξήρχοντο εἷς καθ‿εἷς ἀρξάμενοι ἀπὸ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων 〈ἕως τῶν ἐσχάτων〉καὶ κατελείφθη μόνος 〈ὁ Ἰησοῦς〉καὶ ἡ γυνὴ ἐν μέσῳ οὖσα*

10Then Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?”

10ἀνακύψας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς 〈καὶ μηδένα θεασάμενος πλὴν τὴς γυναικὸς〉εἶπεν αὐτῇ 〈Ἡ〉Γύναι*ποῦ εἰσιν 〈ἐκεῖνοι οἱ κατήγοροί σου〉οὐδείς σε κατέκρινεν

11“No one, Lord,” she answered. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Now go and sin no more.”

11Ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Οὐδείς κύριε Εἶπεν*δὲ 〈αὐτῇ〉ὁ Ἰησοῦς Οὐδὲ ἐγώ σε κατακρίνω πορεύου καὶ [ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν]μηκέτι ἁμάρτανε

12Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

12Πάλιν οὖν αὐτοῖς ἐλάλησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγων Ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου ὁ ἀκολουθῶν ἐμοὶ*οὐ μὴ περιπατήσῃ ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ ἀλλ’ἕξει τὸ φῶς τῆς ζωῆς

13So the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not valid.”

13Εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι Σὺ περὶ σεαυτοῦ μαρτυρεῖς ἡ μαρτυρία σου οὐκ ἔστιν ἀληθής

14Jesus replied, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from or where I am going.

14Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Κἂν ἐγὼ μαρτυρῶ περὶ ἐμαυτοῦ ἀληθής ἐστιν ἡ μαρτυρία μου ὅτι οἶδα πόθεν ἦλθον καὶ ποῦ ὑπάγω ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἔρχομαι ἢ ποῦ ὑπάγω

15You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.

15Ὑμεῖς κατὰ τὴν σάρκα κρίνετε ἐγὼ οὐ κρίνω οὐδένα

16But even if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone; I am with the Father who sent Me.

16καὶ ἐὰν κρίνω δὲ ἐγώ ἡ κρίσις ἡ ἐμὴ ἀληθινή ἐστιν ὅτι μόνος οὐκ εἰμί ἀλλ’ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πέμψας με ‹πατήρ›

17Even in your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid.

17Καὶ ἐν τῷ νόμῳ δὲ τῷ ὑμετέρῳ γέγραπται ὅτι δύο ἀνθρώπων ἡ μαρτυρία ἀληθής ἐστιν

18I am One who testifies about Myself, and the Father, who sent Me, also testifies about Me.”

18ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ μαρτυρῶν περὶ ἐμαυτοῦ καὶ μαρτυρεῖ περὶ ἐμοῦ ὁ πέμψας με Πατήρ

19“Where is Your Father?” they asked Him. “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew Me, you would know My Father as well.”

19Ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ Ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ Πατήρ σου Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Οὔτε ἐμὲ οἴδατε οὔτε τὸν Πατέρα μου εἰ ἐμὲ ᾔδειτε καὶ τὸν Πατέρα μου ἂν ᾔδειτε

20He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts, near the treasury. Yet no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.

20Ταῦτα τὰ ῥήματα ἐλάλησεν ἐν τῷ γαζοφυλακίῳ διδάσκων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπίασεν αὐτόν ὅτι οὔπω ἐληλύθει ἡ ὥρα αὐτοῦ

21Again He said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”

21Εἶπεν οὖν πάλιν αὐτοῖς Ἐγὼ ὑπάγω καὶ ζητήσετέ με καὶ ἐν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ὑμῶν ἀποθανεῖσθε ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν

22So the Jews began to ask, “Will He kill Himself, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”

22Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Μήτι ἀποκτενεῖ ἑαυτὸν ὅτι λέγει Ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν

23Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.

23Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Ὑμεῖς ἐκ τῶν κάτω ἐστέ ἐγὼ ἐκ τῶν ἄνω εἰμί ὑμεῖς ἐκ τούτου τοῦ κόσμου ἐστέ ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου

24That is why I told you that you would die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

24εἶπον οὖν ὑμῖν ὅτι ἀποθανεῖσθε ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ πιστεύσητε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι ἀποθανεῖσθε ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν

25“Who are You?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.

25Ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ Σὺ τίς εἶ Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Τὴν ἀρχὴν ὅ¦τι καὶ λαλῶ ὑμῖν

26“I have much to say about you and much to judge. But the One who sent Me is truthful, and what I have heard from Him, I tell the world.”

26πολλὰ ἔχω περὶ ὑμῶν λαλεῖν καὶ κρίνειν ἀλλ’ὁ πέμψας με ἀληθής ἐστιν κἀγὼ ἃ ἤκουσα παρ’αὐτοῦ ταῦτα λαλῶ εἰς τὸν κόσμον

27They did not understand that He was telling them about the Father.

27Οὐκ ἔγνωσαν ὅτι τὸν Πατέρα αὐτοῖς ἔλεγεν

28So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own, but speak exactly what the Father has taught Me.

28εἶπεν οὖν [αὐτοῖς]ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ὅταν ὑψώσητε τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τότε γνώσεσθε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι καὶ ἀπ’ἐμαυτοῦ ποιῶ οὐδέν ἀλλὰ καθὼς ἐδίδαξέν με ὁ Πατὴρ ταῦτα λαλῶ

29He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.”

29καὶ ὁ πέμψας με μετ’ἐμοῦ ἐστιν οὐκ ἀφῆκέν με μόνον ὅτι ἐγὼ τὰ ἀρεστὰ αὐτῷ ποιῶ πάντοτε

30As Jesus spoke these things, many believed in Him.

30Ταῦτα αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν

31So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples.

31Ἔλεγεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς τοὺς πεπιστευκότας αὐτῷ Ἰουδαίους Ἐὰν ὑμεῖς μείνητε ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τῷ ἐμῷ ἀληθῶς μαθηταί μού ἐστε

32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

32καὶ γνώσεσθε τὴν ἀλήθειαν καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια ἐλευθερώσει ὑμᾶς

33“We are Abraham’s descendants,” they answered. “We have never been slaves to anyone. How can You say we will be set free?”

33Ἀπεκρίθησαν πρὸς αὐτόν Σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ ἐσμεν καὶ οὐδενὶ δεδουλεύκαμεν πώποτε πῶς σὺ λέγεις ὅτι Ἐλεύθεροι γενήσεσθε

34Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.

34Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ἁμαρτίαν δοῦλός ἐστιν τῆς ἁμαρτίας

35A slave does not remain in the house forever, but a son remains forever.

35ὁ δὲ δοῦλος οὐ μένει ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ὁ υἱὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα

36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

36ἐὰν οὖν ὁ Υἱὸς ὑμᾶς ἐλευθερώσῃ ὄντως ἐλεύθεροι ἔσεσθε

37I know you are Abraham’s descendants, but you are trying to kill Me because My word has no place within you.

37Οἶδα ὅτι σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ ἐστε ἀλλὰ ζητεῖτέ με ἀποκτεῖναι ὅτι ὁ λόγος ὁ ἐμὸς οὐ χωρεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν

38I speak of what I have seen in the presence of the Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

38ἃ ἐγὼ ἑώρακα παρὰ τῷ Πατρὶ λαλῶ καὶ ὑμεῖς οὖν ἃ ἠκούσατε παρὰ τοῦ πατρὸς ποιεῖτε

39“Abraham is our father,” they replied. “If you were children of Abraham,” said Jesus, “you would do the works of Abraham.

39Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν Ἀβραάμ ἐστιν Λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Εἰ τέκνα τοῦ Ἀβραάμ ἐστε τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ ἐποιεῖτε*

40But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.

40νῦν δὲ ζητεῖτέ με ἀποκτεῖναι ἄνθρωπον ὃς τὴν ἀλήθειαν ὑμῖν λελάληκα ἣν ἤκουσα παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦτο Ἀβραὰμ οὐκ ἐποίησεν

41You are doing the works of your father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they declared. “Our only Father is God Himself.”

41ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε τὰ ἔργα τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν Εἶπαν [οὖν]αὐτῷ Ἡμεῖς ἐκ πορνείας ‹οὐ γεγεννήμεθα›ἕνα Πατέρα ἔχομεν τὸν Θεόν

42Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on My own, but He sent Me.

42Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Εἰ ὁ Θεὸς Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ἦν ἠγαπᾶτε ἂν ἐμέ ἐγὼ γὰρ ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐξῆλθον καὶ ἥκω οὐδὲ γὰρ ἀπ’ἐμαυτοῦ ἐλήλυθα ἀλλ’ἐκεῖνός με ἀπέστειλεν

43Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message.

43Διὰ τί τὴν λαλιὰν τὴν ἐμὴν οὐ γινώσκετε ὅτι οὐ δύνασθε ἀκούειν τὸν λόγον τὸν ἐμόν

44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

44ὑμεῖς ἐκ τοῦ πατρὸς τοῦ διαβόλου ἐστὲ καὶ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν θέλετε ποιεῖν ἐκεῖνος ἀνθρωποκτόνος ἦν ἀπ’ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ οὐκ ἔστηκεν ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἀλήθεια ἐν αὐτῷ ὅταν λαλῇ τὸ ψεῦδος ἐκ τῶν ἰδίων λαλεῖ ὅτι ψεύστης ἐστὶν καὶ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ

45But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me!

45ἐγὼ δὲ ὅτι τὴν ἀλήθειαν λέγω οὐ πιστεύετέ μοι

46Which of you can prove Me guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me?

46Τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐλέγχει με περὶ ἁμαρτίας εἰ ἀλήθειαν λέγω διὰ τί ὑμεῖς οὐ πιστεύετέ μοι

47Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

47ὁ ὢν ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκούει διὰ τοῦτο ὑμεῖς οὐκ ἀκούετε ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἐστέ

48The Jews answered Him, “Are we not right to say that You are a Samaritan and You have a demon?”

48Ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Οὐ καλῶς λέγομεν ἡμεῖς ὅτι Σαμαρίτης εἶ σὺ καὶ δαιμόνιον ἔχεις

49“I do not have a demon,” Jesus replied, “but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.

49Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Ἐγὼ δαιμόνιον οὐκ ἔχω ἀλλὰ τιμῶ τὸν Πατέρα μου καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀτιμάζετέ με

50I do not seek My own glory. There is One who seeks it, and He is the Judge.

50ἐγὼ δὲ οὐ ζητῶ τὴν δόξαν μου ἔστιν ὁ ζητῶν καὶ κρίνων

51Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.”

51ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐάν τις τὸν ἐμὸν λόγον τηρήσῃ θάνατον οὐ μὴ θεωρήσῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα

52“Now we know that You have a demon!” declared the Jews. “Abraham died, and so did the prophets, yet You say that anyone who keeps Your word will never taste death.

52[Εἶπον οὖν]αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Νῦν ἐγνώκαμεν ὅτι δαιμόνιον ἔχεις Ἀβραὰμ ἀπέθανεν καὶ οἱ προφῆται καὶ σὺ λέγεις Ἐάν τις τὸν λόγον μου τηρήσῃ οὐ μὴ γεύσηται θανάτου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα

53Are You greater than our father Abraham? He died, as did the prophets. Who do You claim to be?”

53μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἀβραάμ ὅστις ἀπέθανεν καὶ οἱ προφῆται ἀπέθανον τίνα σεαυτὸν ποιεῖς

54Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing. The One who glorifies Me is My Father, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’

54Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Ἐὰν ἐγὼ δοξάσω ἐμαυτόν ἡ δόξα μου οὐδέν ἐστιν ἔστιν ὁ Πατήρ μου ὁ δοξάζων με ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι Θεὸς ἡμῶν ἐστιν

55You do not know Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word.

55καὶ οὐκ ἐγνώκατε αὐτόν ἐγὼ δὲ οἶδα αὐτόν κἂν εἴπω ὅτι οὐκ οἶδα αὐτόν ἔσομαι ὅμοιος ὑμῖν ψεύστης ἀλλὰ οἶδα αὐτὸν καὶ τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ τηρῶ

56Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see My day. He saw it and was glad.”

56Ἀβραὰμ ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ἠγαλλιάσατο ἵνα ἴδῃ τὴν ἡμέραν τὴν ἐμήν καὶ εἶδεν καὶ ἐχάρη

57Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”

57Εἶπον*οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς αὐτόν Πεντήκοντα ἔτη οὔπω ἔχεις καὶ Ἀβραὰμ ἑώρακας

58“Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

58Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγὼ εἰμί

59At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple area.

59Ἦραν οὖν λίθους ἵνα βάλωσιν ἐπ’αὐτόν Ἰησοῦς δὲ ἐκρύβη καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τοῦ ἱεροῦ ⧼διελθὼν διὰ μέσου αὐτῶν καὶ παρῆγεν οὕτως⧽
