1Jesus wentout from thereand cameinto His hometown;and His disciplesfollowedHim.2When the Sabbathcame,He beganto teachin the synagogue;and the manylistenerswere astonished, saying,"Wheredid this man [get] these things, and whatis [this] wisdomgivento Him, and suchmiraclesas theseperformedby His hands?3"Is not thisthe carpenter, the sonof Mary, and brotherof Jamesand Josesand Judasand Simon? Are not His sistersherewith us?" And they took offenseat Him.4Jesussaidto them, "A prophetis not without honorexceptin his hometownand amonghis [own] relativesand in his [own] household."5And He coulddonomiraclethereexceptthat He laidHis handson a fewsick peopleand healedthem.6And He wonderedat their unbelief. And He was going aroundthe villagesteaching.

7And He summonedthe twelveand beganto sendthem out in pairs, and gavethem authorityover the uncleanspirits;8and He instructedthem that they should takenothingfor [their] journey, excepta merestaff--nobread,nobag,nomoneyin their belt--9but [to] wearsandals;and [He added], "Do not puton twotunics."10And He saidto them, "Whereveryou entera house, staythereuntilyou leavetown.11"Anyplacethat does not receiveyou orlistento you, as you goout from there, shakethe dustoffthe solesof your feetfor a testimonyagainst them."12They wentout and preachedthat [men] should repent.13And they were castingout manydemonsand were anointingwith oilmanysick peopleand healingthem.

14And KingHerodheard[of it], for His namehad becomewell known;and [people] were saying,"Johnthe Baptisthas risenfrom the dead, and that is whythesemiraculous powersare at workin Him."15But otherswere saying,"He is Elijah."And otherswere saying,"[He is] a prophet, likeoneof the prophets[of old]."16But when Herodheard[of it], he kept saying,"John, whomI beheaded, has risen!"

17For Herodhimselfhad sentand had Johnarrestedand boundin prisonon accountof Herodias, the wifeof his brotherPhilip, becausehe had marriedher.18For Johnhad been sayingto Herod,"It is not lawfulfor you to haveyour brother'swife."19Herodiashad a grudge againsthim and wantedto put him to deathand couldnot [do so];20for Herodwas afraidof John, knowingthat he was a righteousand holyman, and he kept him safe. And when he heardhim, he was veryperplexed;but he used to enjoylisteningto him.21A strategicdaycamewhenHerodon his birthdaygavea banquetfor his lordsand military commandersand the leading menof Galilee;22and when the daughterof Herodiasherselfcamein and danced, she pleasedHerodand his dinner guests;and the kingsaidto the girl,"Askme for whateveryou wantand I will giveit to you."23And he sworeto her, "Whateveryou askof me, I will giveit to you; up to halfof my kingdom."24And she wentout and saidto her mother,"Whatshall I askfor?" And she said,"The headof Johnthe Baptist."25Immediatelyshe camein a hurryto the kingand asked, saying,"I wantyou to giveme at oncethe headof Johnthe Baptiston a platter."26And although the kingwas very sorry,[yet] becauseof his oathsand because of his dinner guests,he was unwillingto refuseher.27Immediatelythe kingsentan executionerand commanded[him] to bring[back] his head. And he wentand had him beheadedin the prison,28and broughthis headon a platter, and gaveit to the girl;and the girlgaveit to her mother.29When his disciplesheard[about this], they cameand took awayhis bodyand laidit in a tomb.

30The apostlesgathered togetherwith Jesus;and they reportedto Him allthat they had doneand taught.31And He saidto them, "Come awayby yourselvesto a secludedplaceand resta while."(For there were many[people] comingand going, and they did not evenhave timeto eat.)32They went awayin the boatto a secludedplaceby themselves.

33[The people] sawthem going, and manyrecognized[them] and rantheretogetheron footfrom allthe cities, and got there aheadof them.34When Jesus went ashore,He sawa largecrowd, and He felt compassionfor them becausethey were likesheepwithouta shepherd;and He beganto teachthem many things.35When it was alreadyquitelate,His disciplescameto Him and said,"Thisplaceis desolateand it is alreadyquitelate;36send them awaysothat they may gointo the surroundingcountrysideand villagesand buythemselvessomethingto eat."37But He answeredthem, "You givethem [something] to eat!"And they saidto Him, "Shall we goand spendtwo hundreddenariion breadand givethem [something] to eat?"38And He saidto them, "How manyloavesdo you have?Golook!"And when they foundout, they said,"Five, and twofish."39And He commandedthem allto sit downby groupson the greengrass.40They sat downin groupsof hundredsand of fifties.41And He tookthe fiveloavesand the twofish, and lookingup towardheaven,He blessed[the food] and brokethe loavesand He kept giving[them] to the disciplesto set beforethem; and He dividedup the twofishamong them all.42They allateand were satisfied,43and they pickedup twelvefullbasketsof the broken pieces, and also of the fish.44There were five thousandmenwho atethe loaves.

45ImmediatelyJesus madeHis disciplesgetinto the boatand go aheadof [Him] to the other sideto Bethsaida, whileHe Himselfwas sendingthe crowdaway.46After bidding them farewell,He leftfor the mountainto pray.

47When it was evening, the boatwas in the middleof the sea,and He was aloneon the land.48Seeingthem strainingat the oars, for the windwas againstthem, at aboutthe fourthwatchof the nightHe cameto them, walkingon the sea;and He intendedto passby them.49But when they sawHim walkingon the sea, they supposedthat it was a ghost, and criedout;50for they allsawHim and were terrified. But immediatelyHe spokewith them and saidto them, "Take courage;it is I, do not be afraid."51ThenHe gotinto the boatwith them, and the windstopped;and they were utterlyastonished,52for they had not gained any insightfrom the [incident of] the loaves, but their heartwas hardened.

53When they had crossed overthey cameto landat Gennesaret, and mooredto the shore.54When they gotout of the boat, immediately[the people] recognizedHim,55and ran aboutthat wholecountryand beganto carryhereand thereon their palletsthosewho were sick,to the placethey heardHe was.56WhereverHe enteredvillages, orcities, orcountryside, they were layingthe sickin the market places, and imploringHim that they might justtouchthe fringeof His cloak;and as manyas touchedit were being cured.
