1Earlyin the morningthe chief priestswith the eldersand scribesand the wholeCouncil,immediatelyhelda consultation;and bindingJesus,they led Him awayand deliveredHim to Pilate.2PilatequestionedHim, "Are You the Kingof the Jews?"And He answeredhim, "[It is as] you say."3The chief priests[began] to accuseHim harshly.4ThenPilatequestionedHim again,saying,"Do You not answer?Seehow manycharges they bring againstYou!"5But Jesusmadenofurtheranswer;soPilatewas amazed.
6Nowat [the] feasthe used to releasefor them [any] oneprisonerwhomthey requested.7The man namedBarabbashad beenimprisonedwith the insurrectionistswhohad committedmurderin the insurrection.8The crowdwentup and beganaskinghim [to] [do] as he had been accustomed to dofor them.9Pilateansweredthem, saying,"Do you wantme to releasefor you the Kingof the Jews?"10For he was awarethat the chief priestshad handedHim over becauseof envy.11But the chief priestsstirredup the crowd[to ask] him to releaseBarabbasfor them instead.12Answeringagain,Pilatesaidto them, "Thenwhatshall I dowith Him whomyou callthe Kingof the Jews?"13They shoutedback,"CrucifyHim!"14But Pilatesaidto them, "Why,whatevilhas He done?"But they shoutedall the more,"CrucifyHim!"15Wishingto satisfythe crowd,PilatereleasedBarabbasfor them, and after having Jesusscourged,he handedHim over to be crucified.
16The soldierstook Him awayinto the palace(that is, the Praetorium),and they called togetherthe whole[Roman] cohort.17They dressedHim up in purple,and after twistinga crownof thorns,they putit on Him;18and they beganto acclaimHim, "Hail,Kingof the Jews!"19They kept beatingHis headwith a reed,and spittingon Him, and kneelingand bowing beforeHim.20Afterthey had mockedHim, they tookthe purple robeoffHim and putHis [own] garmentson Him. And they ledHim out to crucifyHim.
21They pressed into servicea passer-bycomingfrom the country,Simonof Cyrene(the fatherof Alexanderand Rufus),to bearHis cross.
22Thenthey broughtHim to the placeGolgotha,whichis translated,Placeof a Skull.23They tried to giveHim winemixed with myrrh;but He did not takeit.24And they crucifiedHim, and dividedup His garmentsamongthemselves, castinglotsfor them [to decide] whateachmanshould take.25It was the thirdhourwhenthey crucifiedHim.26The inscriptionof the charge againstHim read,"THE KINGOF THE JEWS."
27They crucifiedtworobberswith Him, oneon His rightand oneon His left.28[And the Scripturewas fulfilledwhich says,"And He was numberedwith transgressors.]"29Thosepassingby were hurling abuseat Him, waggingtheir heads,and saying,"Ha!You who [are] [going to] destroythe templeand rebuildit in threedays,30saveYourself,and come downfrom the cross!"31In the same waythe chief priestsalso,along with the scribes,were mocking[Him] amongthemselvesand saying,"He savedothers;He cannotsaveHimself.32"Let [this] Christ,the Kingof Israel,nowcome downfrom the cross,sothat we may seeand believe!"Thosewho were crucifiedwith Him were alsoinsultingHim.
33When the sixthhourcame,darknessfelloverthe wholelanduntilthe ninthhour.34At the ninthhourJesuscriedout with a loudvoice,"ELOI,ELOI,LAMASABACHTHANI?"whichis translated,"MY GOD,MY GOD,WHYHAVE YOU FORSAKENME?"35When someof the bystandersheardit, they [began] saying,"Behold,He is callingfor Elijah."36Someoneranand filleda spongewith sour wine,putit on a reed,and gave Him a drink,saying,"Letus seewhetherElijahwill cometo take Him down."37And Jesusuttereda loudcry,and breathed His last.38And the veilof the templewas tornin twofrom topto bottom.39When the centurion,who was standingright in frontof Him, sawthe wayHe breathed His last,he said,"Trulythismanwas the Sonof God!"
40There were also[some] womenlookingon from a distance,amongwhom[were] MaryMagdalene,and Marythe motherof Jamesthe Lessand Joses,and Salome.41WhenHe was in Galilee,they used to followHim and ministerto Him; and [there were] manyother womenwho cameup with Him to Jerusalem.
42When eveninghad alreadycome,becauseit was the preparation day,that is, the day before the Sabbath,43Josephof Arimatheacame,a prominentmember of the Council,whohimselfwas waitingfor the kingdomof God;and he gathered up courageand wentin beforePilate,and askedfor the bodyof Jesus.44PilatewonderedifHe was deadby this time,and summoningthe centurion,he questionedhim as to whetherHe was alreadydead.45And ascertainingthis from the centurion,he grantedthe bodyto Joseph.46Joseph boughta linencloth,took Him down,wrappedHim in the linen clothand laidHim in a tombwhichhad beenhewnout in the rock;and he rolleda stoneagainstthe entranceof the tomb.47MaryMagdaleneand Marythe [mother] of Joseswere lookingon [to see] whereHe was laid.
