1And He beganto speakto them in parables:"A manPLANTEDA VINEYARDAND PUTA WALLAROUNDIT, AND DUGA VAT UNDER THE WINE PRESSAND BUILTA TOWER,and rentedit out to vine-growersand went on a journey.2"At the [harvest] timehe senta slaveto the vine-growers,in orderto receive[some] of the produceof the vineyardfrom the vine-growers.3"They tookhim, and beathim and sent him awayempty-handed.4"Againhe sentthem anotherslave,and they wounded him in the head,and treatedhim shamefully.5"And he sentanother,and that onethey killed;and [so with] manyothers,beatingsomeand killingothers.6"He hadonemore[to send], a belovedson;he senthim last[of all] to them, saying,'They will respectmy son.'7"But thosevine-growerssaidto one another,'Thisis the heir;come,let us killhim, and the inheritancewill be ours!'8"They tookhim, and killedhim and threwhim out of the vineyard.9"Whatwill the ownerof the vineyarddo?He will comeand destroythe vine-growers,and will givethe vineyardto others.
10"Have you not evenreadthisScripture:THE STONEWHICHTHE BUILDERSREJECTED,THISBECAMETHE CHIEFCORNER[stone];
11THISCAMEABOUT FROM THE LORD,AND IT IS MARVELOUSIN OUR EYES'?"
12And they were seekingto seizeHim, and [yet] they fearedthe people,for they understoodthat He spokethe parableagainstthem. And [so] they leftHim and went away.
13Thenthey sentsomeof the Phariseesand Herodiansto Him in orderto trapHim in a statement.14They cameand saidto Him, "Teacher,we knowthat You are truthfuland deferto no one;for You are not partialto any,but teachthe wayof Godin truth.Is it lawfulto paya poll-taxto Caesar,ornot?15"Shall we payorshall we not pay?"But He, knowingtheir hypocrisy,saidto them, "Whyare you testingMe? BringMe a denariusto lookat."16They brought[one]. And He saidto them, "Whoselikenessand inscriptionis this?"And they saidto Him, "Caesar's."17And Jesussaidto them, "Renderto Caesarthe things that are Caesar's,and to Godthe things that are God's."And they were amazedat Him.
18[Some] Sadducees(whosaythat there is noresurrection)cameto Jesus, and [began] questioningHim, saying,19"Teacher,Moseswrotefor us that IFA MAN'SBROTHERDIESand leaves behinda wifeAND LEAVESNOCHILD,HIS BROTHERSHOULD MARRYTHE WIFEAND RAISEUP CHILDRENTO HIS BROTHER.20"There were sevenbrothers;and the firsttooka wife,and diedleavingnochildren.21"The second onemarriedher, and diedleaving behindnochildren;and the thirdlikewise;22and [so] allsevenleftnochildren.Lastof allthe womandiedalso.23"In the resurrection,whenthey rise again,whichone'swifewill she be? For allsevenhadmarried her."24Jesussaidto them, "Is thisnot the reasonyou are mistaken,that you do not understandthe Scripturesorthe powerof God?25"For whenthey risefrom the dead,they neithermarrynorare given in marriage,but are likeangelsin heaven.26"But regardingthe factthat the deadrise again,have you not readin the bookof Moses,in the [passage] about[the burning] bush,howGodspoke to him, saying,I AM THE GODOF ABRAHAM,AND THE GODOF ISAAC,and the Godof Jacob'?27"He is not the Godof the dead,but of the living;you are greatlymistaken."
28Oneof the scribescameand heardthem arguing,and recognizingthat He had answeredthem well,askedHim, "Whatcommandmentis the foremostof all?"29Jesusanswered,"The foremostis, 'HEAR,O ISRAEL!THE LORDOUR GODIS ONELORD;30AND YOU SHALL LOVETHE LORDYOUR GODWITH ALLYOUR HEART,AND WITH ALLYOUR SOUL,AND WITH ALLYOUR MIND,AND WITH ALLYOUR STRENGTH.'31"The secondis this,YOU SHALL LOVEYOUR NEIGHBORAS YOURSELF.'There is noothercommandmentgreaterthan these."32The scribesaidto Him, "Right,Teacher;You have trulystatedthat HE IS ONE,AND THERE IS NOONE ELSEBESIDESHIM;33AND TO LOVEHIM WITH ALLTHE HEARTAND WITH ALLTHE UNDERSTANDINGAND WITH ALLTHE STRENGTH,AND TO LOVEONE'S NEIGHBORAS HIMSELF,is much morethan allburnt offeringsand sacrifices."34When Jesussawthat he had answeredintelligently,He saidto him, "You are not farfrom the kingdomof God."After that, no onewould ventureto askHim any morequestions.
35And Jesus[began] to say,as He taughtin the temple,"How[is it that] the scribessaythat the Christis the sonof David?
36"Davidhimselfsaidin the HolySpirit,THE LORDSAIDTO MY LORD,"SITAT MY RIGHT HAND,UNTILI PUTYOUR ENEMIESBENEATHYOUR FEET."'
37"DavidhimselfcallsHim 'Lord;soin what senseis He his son?"And the largecrowdenjoyedlisteningto Him.
38In His teachingHe was saying:"Bewareof the scribeswho liketo walk aroundin long robes,and [like] respectful greetingsin the market places,39and chief seatsin the synagoguesand places of honorat banquets,40who devourwidows'houses,and for appearance's sakeofferlongprayers;thesewill receivegreatercondemnation."
41And He sat downoppositethe treasury,and [began] observinghowthe peoplewere puttingmoneyinto the treasury;and manyrich peoplewere puttingin large sums.42A poorwidowcameand putin twosmall copper coins,whichamountto a cent.43CallingHis disciplesto Him, He saidto them, "TrulyI sayto you, thispoorwidowputin morethan allthe contributorsto the treasury;44for they allputin out of their surplus,but she, out of her poverty,putin allshe owned,allshe had to liveon."
