1Then the menof Ephraimwere summoned,and they crossedto Zaphonand saidto Jephthah,"Whydid you crossoverto fightagainst the sonsof Ammonwithoutcallingus to gowith you? We will burnyour housedown on you."2Jephthahsaidto them, "I and my peoplewere at greatstrifewith the sonsof Ammon;when I calledyou, you did not deliverme from their hand.3"When I sawthat you would not deliver[me], I tookmy lifein my handsand crossedoveragainstthe sonsof Ammon,and the LORDgavethem into my hand.Whythen have you comeup to me thisdayto fightagainst me?"4Then Jephthahgatheredallthe menof Gileadand foughtEphraim;and the menof GileaddefeatedEphraim,becausethey said,"You are fugitivesof Ephraim,O Gileadites,in the midstof Ephraim[and] in the midstof Manasseh."5The Gileaditescapturedthe fordsof the Jordanopposite Ephraim.And it happenedwhen[any of] the fugitivesof Ephraimsaid,"Let me crossover,"the menof Gileadwould sayto him, "Are you an Ephraimite?"If he said,"No,"6then they would sayto him, "Saynow,'Shibboleth.'"But he said,"Sibboleth,"for he couldnot pronounceit correctly.Then they seizedhim and slewhim at the fordsof the Jordan.Thus there fellat that time42000of Ephraim.
7JephthahjudgedIsraelsixyears.Then Jephthahthe Gileaditediedand was buriedin [one of] the citiesof Gilead.
8Now Ibzanof BethlehemjudgedIsraelafterhim.9He hadthirtysons,and thirtydaughters[whom] he gavein marriage outside[the family], and he broughtin thirtydaughtersfrom outsidefor his sons.And he judgedIsraelsevenyears.10Then Ibzandiedand was buriedin Bethlehem.
11Now Elonthe ZebulunitejudgedIsraelafterhim; and he judgedIsraeltenyears.12Then Elonthe Zebulunitediedand was buriedat Aijalonin the landof Zebulun.
13Now Abdonthe sonof Hillelthe PirathonitejudgedIsraelafterhim.14He hadfortysonsand thirtygrandsonswho rodeon seventydonkeys;and he judgedIsraeleightyears.15Then Abdonthe sonof Hillelthe Pirathonitediedand was buriedat Pirathonin the landof Ephraim,in the hillcountryof the Amalekites.
