When Pashhurthe priest,the sonof Immer,whowas chiefofficerin the houseof the LORD,heardJeremiahprophesyingthesethings,2Pashhurhad Jeremiahthe prophetbeatenand puthim in the stocksthat were at the upperBenjaminGate,whichwas by the houseof the LORD.3On the nextday,when PashhurreleasedJeremiahfrom the stocks,Jeremiahsaidto him, "Pashhuris not the namethe LORDhas calledyou, but ratherMagor-missabib.4"For thussaysthe LORD,'Behold,I am going to makeyou a terrorto yourself and to allyour friends;and while your eyeslookon, they will fallby the swordof their enemies.So I will giveover allJudahto the handof the kingof Babylon,and he will carrythem awayas exilesto Babylonand will slaythem with the sword.5I will also giveover allthe wealthof thiscity,allits produceand allits costlythings;even allthe treasuresof the kingsof JudahI will giveover to the handof their enemies,and they will plunderthem, takethem away and bringthem to Babylon.6And you, Pashhur,and allwho livein your housewill gointo captivity;and you will enterBabylon,and thereyou will dieand thereyou will be buried,you and allyour friendsto whomyou have falselyprophesied.'"
O LORD,You have deceivedme and I was deceived;You have overcomeme and prevailed.I have becomea laughingstockalldaylong; Everyonemocksme.
For eachtimeI speak,I cryaloud;I proclaimviolenceand destruction,Becausefor me the wordof the LORDhas resultedIn reproachand derisionalldaylong.
But if I say,"I will not rememberHim Or speakanymorein His name,"Then in my heartit becomeslike a burningfireShutup in my bones;And I am wearyof holding[it] in, And I cannotendure[it].
For I have heardthe whisperingof many,"Terroron everyside!Denounce[him]; yes, let us denouncehim!" Allmy trustedfriends,Watchingfor my fall,say: "Perhapshe will be deceived,so that we may prevailagainst him And takeour revengeon him."
But the LORDis with me like a dreadchampion;Thereforemy persecutorswill stumbleand not prevail.They will be utterlyashamed,becausethey have failed,With an everlastingdisgracethat will not be forgotten.
Yet, O LORDof hosts,You who testthe righteous,Who seethe mindand the heart;Let me seeYour vengeanceon them; For to You I have setforthmy cause.
Singto the LORD,praisethe LORD!For He has deliveredthe soulof the needyoneFrom the handof evildoers.
Cursedbe the daywhenI was born;Let the daynot be blessedwhenmy motherboreme!
Cursedbe the manwhobroughtthe newsTo my father,saying,"A babyboyhas been bornto you!" [And] made him veryhappy.
But let that manbe like the citiesWhichthe LORDoverthrewwithoutrelenting,And let him hearan outcryin the morningAnd a shoutof alarmat noon;
Becausehe did not killme beforebirth,So that my motherwould have beenmy grave,And her wombeverpregnant.
Whydid I evercomeforthfrom the wombTo lookon troubleand sorrow,So that my dayshave beenspentin shame?
