1Now Dinahthe daughterof Leah,whomshe had borneto Jacob,wentout to visitthe daughtersof the land.2When Shechemthe sonof Hamorthe Hivite,the princeof the land,sawher, he tookher and laywith her by force.3He was deeplyattractedto Dinahthe daughterof Jacob,and he lovedthe girland spoketenderlyto her.4So Shechemspoketo his fatherHamor,saying,"Getme thisyounggirlfor a wife."5Now Jacobheardthat he had defiledDinahhis daughter;but his sonswere with his livestockin the field,so Jacobkeptsilentuntilthey camein.6Then Hamorthe fatherof Shechemwentout to Jacobto speakwith him.7Now the sonsof Jacobcamein from the fieldwhen they heard[it]; and the menwere grieved,and they were veryangrybecausehe had donea disgracefulthingin Israelby lyingwith Jacob'sdaughter,for sucha thingought not to be done.
8But Hamorspokewith them, saying,"The soulof my sonShechemlongsfor your daughter;pleasegiveher to him in marriage.9"Intermarrywith us; giveyour daughtersto us and takeour daughtersfor yourselves.10"Thus you shall livewith us, and the landshall be [open] beforeyou; liveand tradein it and acquirepropertyin it."11Shechemalso saidto her fatherand to her brothers,"If I findfavorin your sight,then I will givewhateveryou sayto me.12"Askme ever somuchbridalpaymentand gift,and I will giveaccording as you sayto me; but giveme the girlin marriage."
13But Jacob'ssonsansweredShechemand his fatherHamorwith deceit,becausehe had defiledDinahtheir sister.14They saidto them, "We cannotdothisthing,to giveour sisterto onewhois uncircumcised,for that would be a disgraceto us.15"Onlyon this[condition] will we consentto you: ifyou will becomelikeus, in that everymaleof you be circumcised,16then we will giveour daughtersto you, and we will takeyour daughtersfor ourselves, and we will livewith you and becomeonepeople.17"But ifyou will not listento us to be circumcised,then we will takeour daughterand go."
18Now their wordsseemedreasonableto Hamorand Shechem,Hamor'sson.19The youngmandid not delayto dothe thing,becausehe was delightedwith Jacob'sdaughter.Now he was morerespectedthanallthe householdof his father.20So Hamorand his sonShechemcameto the gateof their cityand spoketo the menof their city,saying,21"Thesemenare friendlywith us; therefore let them livein the landand tradein it, for behold,the landis largeenoughfor them. Let us taketheir daughtersin marriage,and giveour daughtersto them.22"Onlyon this[condition] will the menconsentto us to livewith us, to becomeonepeople:that everymaleamong us be circumcisedas they are circumcised.23"Will not their livestockand their propertyand alltheir animalsbe ours? Onlylet us consentto them, and they will livewith us."24Allwho wentout of the gateof his citylistenedto Hamorand to his sonShechem,and everymalewas circumcised,allwho wentout of the gateof his city.
25Now it cameabout on the thirdday,when they were in pain,that twoof Jacob'ssons,Simeonand Levi,Dinah'sbrothers,eachtookhis swordand cameupon the cityunawares,and killedeverymale.26They killedHamorand his sonShechemwith the edgeof the sword,and tookDinahfrom Shechem'shouse,and wentforth.27Jacob'ssonscameupon the slainand lootedthe city,becausethey had defiledtheir sister.28They tooktheir flocksand their herdsand their donkeys,and that whichwas in the cityand that whichwas in the field;29and they capturedand lootedalltheir wealthand alltheir littleonesand their wives,even allthat [was] in the houses.30Then Jacobsaidto Simeonand Levi,"You have broughttroubleon me by makingme odiousamong the inhabitantsof the land,among the Canaanitesand the Perizzites;and my menbeing fewin number,they will gathertogether againstme and attackme and I will be destroyed,I and my household."31But they said,"Should he treatour sisteras a harlot?"
