1Now it cameabout, whenIsaacwas oldand his eyeswere toodimto see,that he calledhis oldersonEsauand saidto him, "My son."And he saidto him, "HereI am."2Isaac said,"Beholdnow,I amold[and] I do not knowthe dayof my death.3"Nowthen, pleasetakeyour gear,your quiverand your bow,and goout to the fieldand huntgamefor me;4and preparea savorydishfor me suchas I love,and bringit to me that I may eat,sothat my soulmay blessyou beforeI die."
5Rebekahwas listeningwhile Isaacspoketo his sonEsau.So when Esauwentto the fieldto huntfor gameto bring[home],6Rebekahsaidto her sonJacob,"Behold,I heardyour fatherspeakto your brotherEsau,saying,7Bringme [some] gameand preparea savorydishfor me, that I may eat,and blessyou in the presenceof the LORDbeforemy death.'8"Nowtherefore, my son,listento me as I commandyou.9"Gonowto the flockand bringme twochoiceyounggoatsfrom there,that I may preparethem [as] a savorydishfor your father,suchas he loves.10"Then you shall bring[it] to your father,that he may eat,sothat he may blessyou beforehis death."11Jacobansweredhis motherRebekah,"Behold,Esaumy brotheris a hairymanand I am a smoothman.12"Perhapsmy fatherwill feelme, then I will be as a deceiverin his sight,and I will bringupon myself a curseand not a blessing."13But his mothersaidto him, "Your cursebe on me, my son;onlyobeymy voice,and go,get[them] for me."14So he wentand got[them], and brought[them] to his mother;and his mothermadesavoryfoodsuchas his fatherloved.15Then Rebekahtookthe bestgarmentsof Esauher elderson,whichwere with her in the house,and putthem on Jacobher youngerson.16And she putthe skinsof the younggoatson his handsand on the smoothpartof his neck.17She also gavethe savoryfoodand the bread,whichshe had made,to her sonJacob.
18Then he cameto his fatherand said,"My father."And he said,"HereI am. Whoare you, my son?"19Jacobsaidto his father,"I am Esauyour firstborn;I have doneas you toldme. Getup, please,sitand eatof my game,that you may blessme."20Isaacsaidto his son,"Howis it that you have[it] so quickly,my son?"And he said,"Becausethe LORDyour Godcaused [it] to happento me."21Then Isaacsaidto Jacob,"Pleasecomeclose,that I may feelyou, my son,whether you are reallymy sonEsauornot."22So Jacobcamecloseto Isaachis father,and he felthim and said,"The voiceis the voiceof Jacob,but the handsare the handsof Esau."23He did not recognizehim, becausehis handswere hairylike his brotherEsau'shands;so he blessedhim.24And he said,"Are you reallymy sonEsau?"And he said,"I am."25So he said,"Bring[it] to me, and I will eatof my son'sgame,that I may blessyou." And he brought[it] to him, and he ate;he also broughthim wineand he drank.26Then his fatherIsaacsaidto him, "Pleasecomecloseand kissme, my son."
27So he camecloseand kissedhim; and when he smelledthe smellof his garments,he blessedhim and said,"See,the smellof my sonIs like the smellof a fieldwhichthe LORDhas blessed;
28Now may Godgiveyou of the dewof heaven,And of the fatnessof the earth,And an abundanceof grainand newwine;
29May peoplesserveyou, And nationsbowdownto you; Be masterof your brothers,And may your mother'ssonsbowdownto you. Cursedbe those who curseyou, And blessedbe those who blessyou."
30Now it cameabout, as soonas Isaachad finishedblessingJacob,and Jacobhad hardlygoneout from the presenceof Isaachis father,that Esauhis brothercamein from his hunting.31Then he alsomadesavoryfood,and broughtit to his father;and he saidto his father,"Let my fatherariseand eatof his son'sgame,that you may blessme."32Isaachis fathersaidto him, "Whoare you?" And he said,"I am your son,your firstborn,Esau."33Then Isaactrembledviolently,and said,"Whowas he thenthat huntedgameand brought[it] to me, so that I ateof all[of it] beforeyou came,and blessedhim? Yes,and he shall be blessed."34When Esauheardthe wordsof his father,he criedout with an exceedinglygreatand bittercry,and saidto his father,"Blessme, [even] me also,O my father!"35And he said,"Your brothercamedeceitfullyand has takenaway your blessing."36Then he said,"Is he not rightly namedJacob,for he has supplantedme thesetwotimes?He tookaway my birthright,and behold,nowhe has takenaway my blessing."And he said,"Have you not reserveda blessingfor me?"37But Isaacrepliedto Esau,"Behold,I have madehim your master,and allhis relativesI have givento him as servants;and with grainand newwineI have sustainedhim. Now as for you then,whatcan I do,my son?"38Esausaidto his father,"Do you have only oneblessing,my father?Blessme, [even] me also,O my father."So Esauliftedhis voiceand wept.
39Then Isaachis fatheransweredand saidto him, "Behold,away from the fertilityof the earthshall be your dwelling,And away from the dewof heavenfrom above.
40"By your swordyou shall live,And your brotheryou shall serve;But it shall comeabout whenyou becomerestless,That you will breakhis yokefrom your neck."
41So Esauborea grudgeagainstJacobbecauseof the blessingwith whichhis fatherhad blessedhim; and Esausaidto himself,"The daysof mourningfor my fatherare near;then I will killmy brotherJacob."42Now when the wordsof her eldersonEsauwere reportedto Rebekah,she sentand calledher youngersonJacob,and saidto him, "Beholdyour brotherEsauis consolinghimself concerning you [by planning] to killyou.43"Nowtherefore, my son,obeymy voice,and arise,fleeto Haran,to my brotherLaban!44"Staywith him a fewdays,untilyour brother'sfurysubsides,45untilyour brother'sangeragainstyou subsidesand he forgetswhatyou didto him. Then I will sendand getyou from there.Whyshould I be bereavedof you bothin oneday?"
46Rebekahsaidto Isaac,"I am tiredof livingbecauseof the daughtersof Heth;ifJacobtakesa wifefrom the daughtersof Heth,like these,from the daughtersof the land,whatgood will my lifebe to me?"
