1Thus the heavensand the earthwere completed, and alltheir hosts.2By the seventhdayGodcompletedHis workwhichHe had done, and He restedon the seventhdayfrom allHis workwhichHe had done.3Then Godblessedthe seventhdayand sanctifiedit, becausein it He restedfrom allHis workwhichGodhad createdand made.
4Thisis the accountof the heavensand the earthwhen they were created,in the daythat the LORDGodmadeearthand heaven.5Now noshrubof the fieldwas yetin the earth, and noplantof the fieldhad yetsprouted, for the LORDGodhad not sentrainupon the earth, and there was nomanto cultivatethe ground.6But a mistused to risefrom the earthand waterthe wholesurfaceof the ground.7Then the LORDGodformedmanof dustfrom the ground, and breathedinto his nostrilsthe breathof life;and manbecamea livingbeing.8The LORDGodplanteda gardentowardthe east,in Eden;and thereHe placedthe manwhomHe had formed.9Out of the groundthe LORDGodcaused to groweverytreethat is pleasingto the sightand goodfor food;the treeof lifealso in the midstof the garden, and the treeof the knowledgeof goodand evil.
10Now a riverflowedout of Edento waterthe garden;and from thereit dividedand becamefourrivers.11The nameof the firstis Pishon;it flowsaroundthe wholelandof Havilah, wherethereis gold.12The goldof that landis good;the bdelliumand the onyxstoneare there.13The nameof the secondriveris Gihon;it flowsaroundthe wholelandof Cush.14The nameof the thirdriveris Tigris;it flowseastof Assyria. And the fourthriveris the Euphrates.
15Then the LORDGodtookthe manand puthim into the gardenof Edento cultivateit and keepit.16The LORDGodcommandedthe man, saying,"From anytreeof the gardenyou may eatfreely;17but from the treeof the knowledgeof goodand evilyou shall not eat,for in the daythat you eatfrom it you will surelydie."
18Then the LORDGodsaid,"It is not goodfor the manto be alone;I will makehim a helpersuitablefor him."19Out of the groundthe LORDGodformedeverybeastof the fieldand everybirdof the sky,and brought[them] to the manto seewhathe would callthem; and whateverthe mancalleda livingcreature, that was its name.20The mangavenamesto allthe cattle, and to the birdsof the sky,and to everybeastof the field, but for Adamthere was not founda helpersuitablefor him.21So the LORDGodcaused a deepsleepto fallupon the man,and he slept;then He tookoneof his ribsand closedup the fleshat that place.22The LORDGodfashionedinto a womanthe ribwhichHe had takenfrom the man,and broughther to the man.
23The mansaid,"Thisis nowboneof my bones,And fleshof my flesh; She shall be calledWoman,Becauseshe was takenout of Man."
24For thisreasona manshall leavehis fatherand his mother, and be joinedto his wife;and they shall becomeoneflesh.25And the manand his wifewere bothnakedand were not ashamed.
