1Then allthe congregationof the sonsof Israeljourneyedby stagesfrom the wildernessof Sin,accordingto the commandof the LORD,and campedat Rephidim,and therewas nowaterfor the peopleto drink.2Therefore the peoplequarreledwith Mosesand said,"Giveus waterthat we may drink."And Mosessaidto them, "Whydo you quarrelwith me? Whydo you testthe LORD?"3But the peoplethirstedtherefor water;and they grumbledagainstMosesand said,"Why,now,have you broughtus up from Egypt,to killus and our childrenand our livestockwith thirst?"4So Mosescriedout to the LORD,saying,"Whatshall I doto thispeople?A littlemoreand they will stoneme."5Then the LORDsaidto Moses,"Passbeforethe peopleand takewith you someof the eldersof Israel;and takein your handyour staffwith whichyou struckthe Nile,and go.6"Behold,I will standbeforeyou thereon the rockat Horeb;and you shall strikethe rock,and waterwill comeout of it, that the peoplemay drink."And Mosesdidsoin the sightof the eldersof Israel.7He namedthe placeMassahand Meribahbecauseof the quarrelof the sonsof Israel,and becausethey testedthe LORD,saying,"Is the LORDamongus, ornot?"
8Then Amalekcameand foughtagainstIsraelat Rephidim.9So Mosessaidto Joshua,"Choosemenfor us and goout, fightagainst Amalek.TomorrowI will stationmyselfon the topof the hillwith the staffof Godin my hand."10Joshuadidas Mosestoldhim, and foughtagainst Amalek;and Moses,Aaron,and Hurwentup to the topof the hill.11So it cameabout whenMosesheldhis handup, that Israelprevailed,and whenhe let his handdown,Amalekprevailed.12But Moses' handswere heavy.Then they tooka stoneand putit underhim, and he saton it; and Aaronand Hursupportedhis hands,oneon onesideand oneon the other.Thus his handswere steadyuntilthe sunset.13So JoshuaoverwhelmedAmalekand his peoplewith the edgeof the sword.
14Then the LORDsaidto Moses,"Writethisin a bookas a memorialand reciteit to Joshua,that I will utterlyblotout the memoryof Amalekfrom underheaven."15Mosesbuiltan altarand namedit The LORDis My Banner;16and he said,"The LORDhas sworn;the LORDwill have waragainst Amalekfrom generationto generation."
