1Now when Davidreachedoldage,he madehis sonSolomonkingoverIsrael.2And he gatheredtogether allthe leadersof Israelwith the priestsand the Levites.
3The Leviteswere numberedfrom thirtyyearsoldand upward,and their numberby censusof menwas 38,0004Of these,24000were to overseethe workof the houseof the LORD;and 6,000[were] officersand judges,5and 4,000[were] gatekeepers,and 4,000[were] praisingthe LORDwith the instrumentswhichDavid madefor givingpraise.6Daviddividedthem into divisionsaccording to the sonsof Levi:Gershon,Kohath,and Merari.
7Of the Gershonites[were] Ladanand Shimei.8The sonsof Ladan[were] Jehielthe firstand Zethamand Joel,three.9The sonsof Shimei[were] Shelomothand Hazieland Haran,three.Thesewere the headsof the fathers'[households] of Ladan.10The sonsof Shimei[were] Jahath,Zina,Jeushand Beriah.Thesefour[were] the sonsof Shimei.11Jahathwas the firstand Zizahthe second;but Jeushand Beriahdid not have manysons,so they becamea father'shousehold,oneclass.
12The sonsof Kohathwere four:Amram,Izhar,Hebronand Uzziel.13The sonsof Amramwere Aaronand Moses.And Aaronwas setapartto sanctifyhim as mostholy,he and his sonsforever,to burnincensebeforethe LORD,to ministerto Him and to blessin His nameforever.14But [as for] Mosesthe manof God,his sonswere namedamongthe tribeof Levi.15The sonsof Moses[were] Gershomand Eliezer.16The sonof Gershom[was] Shebuelthe chief.17The sonof Eliezerwas Rehabiahthe chief;and Eliezerhadnoothersons,but the sonsof Rehabiahwere verymany.18The sonof Izharwas Shelomiththe chief.19The sonsof Hebron[were] Jeriahthe first,Amariahthe second,Jahazielthe thirdand Jekameamthe fourth.20The sonsof Uzziel[were] Micahthe firstand Isshiahthe second.
21The sonsof Merariwere Mahliand Mushi.The sonsof Mahli[were] Eleazarand Kish.22Eleazardiedand hadnosons,but daughtersonly,so their brothers,the sonsof Kish,tookthem [as wives].23The sonsof Mushi[were] three:Mahli,Ederand Jeremoth.
24Thesewere the sonsof Leviaccording to their fathers'households,[even] the headsof the fathers'[households] of those of them who were counted,in the numberof namesby their census,doingthe workfor the serviceof the houseof the LORD,from twentyyearsoldand upward.25For Davidsaid,"The LORDGodof Israelhas givenrestto His people,and He dwellsin Jerusalemforever.26"Also,the Leviteswill nolonger need to carrythe tabernacleand allits utensilsfor its service."27For by the lastwordsof Davidthe sonsof Levi[were] numberedfrom twentyyearsoldand upward.28For their officeis to assistthe sonsof Aaronwith the serviceof the houseof the LORD,in the courtsand in the chambersand in the purifyingof allholythings,even the workof the serviceof the houseof God,29and with the showbread,and the fineflourfor a grain offering,and unleavenedwafers,or [what is baked in] the panor what is well-mixed,and allmeasuresof volumeand size.30They are to standeverymorningto thankand to praisethe LORD,and likewiseat evening,31and to offerallburntofferingsto the LORD,on the sabbaths,the newmoonsand the fixedfestivalsin the number[set] by the ordinanceconcerningthem, continuallybeforethe LORD.32Thus they are to keepchargeof the tentof meeting,and chargeof the holyplace, and chargeof the sonsof Aarontheir relatives,for the serviceof the houseof the LORD.
