Many Jews anticipated a political and military Messiah who would liberate them from Roman oppression and restore the kingdom of Israel to its former glory. This hope is rooted in Old Testament prophecies, such as those found in Isaiah 9:6-7 and Jeremiah 23:5-6, which speak of a coming ruler from the line of David. The disciples' disappointment indicates their misunderstanding of the nature of Jesus' mission, which was spiritual redemption rather than political liberation. This expectation of redemption is also seen in the actions of figures like Simeon in Luke 2:25-32, who awaited the "consolation of Israel." And besides all this, This phrase suggests a culmination of events and emotions. The disciples are recounting the recent happenings that have dashed their hopes. It indicates a sense of finality and resignation, as if to say that all their expectations have been proven wrong. This reflects the deep despair and confusion among Jesus' followers after His crucifixion, as they struggled to reconcile their hopes with the reality of His death. it is the third day since these things took place. The mention of the "third day" is significant in the context of Jesus' resurrection. Jesus had foretold His resurrection on the third day in passages such asMatthew 16:21 andLuke 9:22. The third day is also symbolic in Jewish tradition, often associated with divine intervention and new beginnings, as seen inHosea 6:2. The disciples' reference to the third day highlights their awareness of Jesus' predictions, yet their lack of understanding or belief in the resurrection. This sets the stage for the revelation of the risen Christ, emphasizing the fulfillment of prophecy and the transformative power of the resurrection. Persons / Places / Events 1. Cleopas and the Other DiscipleThese two disciples were traveling to Emmaus and were discussing the recent events concerning Jesus' crucifixion and the reports of His resurrection. 2. JesusAlthough initially unrecognized by the disciples, Jesus joins them on their journey and engages in conversation about the recent events in Jerusalem. 3. EmmausA village about seven miles from Jerusalem, where the disciples were heading when they encountered Jesus. 4. JerusalemThe city where Jesus was crucified and where the resurrection was first reported. 5. The Third DayThis refers to the time frame since Jesus' crucifixion, significant in Jewish eschatological expectation and prophecy fulfillment. Teaching Points Hope in RedemptionThe disciples' hope for redemption was not misplaced but misunderstood. True redemption through Christ transcends political or national expectations and is spiritual and eternal. Understanding ProphecyThe disciples' misunderstanding highlights the importance of knowing and interpreting Scripture correctly. Jesus' fulfillment of prophecy was not in the way they expected, teaching us to seek God's wisdom in understanding His plans. The Significance of the Third DayThe mention of the third day underscores the fulfillment of Jesus' prophecy about His resurrection, affirming the reliability of His words and the Scriptures. Recognizing Jesus in Our JourneyLike the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we may not always recognize Jesus in our circumstances. We are encouraged to seek His presence and guidance in our daily walk. Bible Study Questions and Answers 1.What is the meaning of Luke 24:21?

14.What are the Times of the Gentiles? What Does Luke 24:21 Mean But we were hoping– The travelers speak in the past tense, revealing crushed expectations. Their hearts echoProverbs 13:12, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life”. – They had watched Jesus heal, teach with authority, and even raise the dead (Luke 7:22; 8:54–55). Each miracle had fanned the flame of hope that at last Israel’s Deliverer had come (Isaiah 35:4–6). – Yet Calvary seemed to slam the door shut. Like the psalmist they could cry, “Why are you downcast, O my soul?” (Psalm 42:5). He was the One who would redeem Israel– “Redeem” meant buying back from bondage (Exodus 6:6). Zechariah had celebrated that very promise at Jesus’ birth: “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people” (Luke 1:68). – Most Israelites pictured political freedom from Rome (Acts 1:6). Scripture, however, pointed first to release from sin’s slavery (Isaiah 59:20;John 1:29;Titus 2:14). – The cross accomplished that deeper rescue: “You know that you were redeemed … with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18–19). The disciples’ eyes had not yet caught up with that reality. And besides all this– Disappointment piled up: • Betrayal by Judas (Luke 22:47–48) • A sham trial before the Sanhedrin and Pilate (Luke 22:66 – 23:25) • Crucifixion, death, and hurried burial (Luke 23:33, 50–56) – “All this” felt overwhelming, the very opposite of the kingdom victory they expected (Psalm 22:1;Luke 24:19–20). It is the third day since these things took place– Jesus had foretold this timetable repeatedly: “The Son of Man … will be raised on the third day” (Luke 9:22; 18:33). – Prophecy stood behind it: Jonah’s three days (Matthew 12:40) andHosea 6:2, “On the third day He will raise us up”. – Even their own report included rumors of an empty tomb (Luke 24:22–24). The pieces were all on the table; they simply had not been put together yet (1 Corinthians 15:4). summaryLuke 24:21 captures hearts caught between shattered hopes and coming glory. The travelers mourn a Messiah they believed would set Israel free, unaware that His death has already paid the ransom for sin and that His promised third-day resurrection is even now dawning. Their sorrow soon turns to joy when the risen Christ opens the Scriptures and their eyes, proving that God’s plan has never faltered and that every promise stands sure. (21) But we trusted.--The pronoun is emphatic. " We, the disciples, were hoping . . . ,"whatever might be the judgment of others. Which should have redeemed Israel.--More exactly,He that is about to redeem . . . The two travellers belonged apparently to those who now, as at the time of the Nativity, were waiting for redemption in Jerusalem (Luke 2:38). To day is the third day .--We note how naturally the disciples fall, from the first, into this method of describing the interval since the Crucifixion. Verse 21. - But we trusted that it had been he which shouldhave redeemed Israel. And we who were his friends and followers, we thought we had found in him the Redeemer of Israel, King Messiah! Think! the Redeemer crucified! Although the Redeemer, in the sense they-probably understood the word, was something very different to the sense we give to it, the idea was still something very lofty and sublime. It in-eluded, no doubt, much of earthly glory and dominion for Israel, but in some definite sense the Gentile world, too, would share in the blessings of Messiah. And to think of the shameful cross putting an end to all these hopes! And beside all this, to-day is the third day since these thingswere done. But yet terrible and despairing as was the story of Cleopas and his friend, their tone was not quite hopeless; for they went on, "And now we have come to the third day since they crucified him." No doubt they dwelt a short space on the expression, "third day," telling the Stranger how their dead Master, when alive, had bade his friends watch for the third day from his death. The third day, he had told them, would be the day of his triumphant return to them; and, strangely enough, on the early morning of this third day, something did happen which had stirred, excited, and perplexed them. Certain women of their company, who had been early to the grave of the Master, meaning to embalm the corpse, found the sepulchre empty, and they came back reporting how they had seen a vision of angels there, who told them their Master lived. What did it all mean?
