Phinehas Kills Zimri and Cozbi 6And, behold, oneof the childrenof Israelcameand broughtunto his brethrena Midianitish womanin the sightof Moses,and in the sightof all the congregationof the childrenof Israel,who [were] weeping[before] the doorof the tabernacleof the congregation.7And when Phinehas,the sonof Eleazar,the sonof Aaronthe priest,saw[it], he rose upfrom amongthe congregation,and tooka javelinin his hand;8And he wentafterthe manof Israelinto the tent,and thrustbothof them through, the manof Israel,and the womanthroughher belly.So the plaguewas stayedfrom the childrenof Israel.9And those that diedin the plaguewere twentyand fourthousand. Phinehas' Reward 10And the LORDspakeunto Moses,saying,11Phinehas,the sonof Eleazar,the sonof Aaronthe priest,hath turnedmy wrathawayfrom the childrenof Israel,while he was zealousfor my sakeamongthem, that I consumednot the childrenof Israelin my jealousy.12Wherefore say,Behold, I giveunto him my covenantof peace:13And he shall have it, and his seedafterhim, [even] the covenantof an everlastingpriesthood;becausehe was zealousfor his God,and made an atonementfor the childrenof Israel. 14Now the nameof the Israelitethat was slain,[even] that was slainwith the Midianitish woman,[was] Zimri,the sonof Salu,a princeof a chiefhouseamong the Simeonites.15And the nameof the Midianitishwomanthat was slain[was] Cozbi,the daughterof Zur;he [was] headover a people,[and] of a chiefhousein Midian. A Warning against the Midianites 16And the LORDspakeunto Moses,saying,17Vexthe Midianites,and smitethem:18For they vexyou with their wiles,wherewith they have beguiledyou in the matterof Peor,and in the matterof Cozbi,the daughterof a princeof Midian,their sister,which was slainin the dayof the plaguefor Peor'ssake. |
