Balak Summons Balaam

1And the childrenof Israelset forward,and pitchedin the plainsof Moabon this sideJordan[by] Jericho.

2And Balakthe sonof Zipporsawall that Israelhad doneto the Amorites.3And Moabwas soreafraidofthe people,because they [were] many:and Moabwas distressedbecause ofthe childrenof Israel.4And Moabsaidunto the eldersof Midian,Now shall this companylick upall [that are] round aboutus, as the oxlicketh upthe grassof the field.And Balakthe sonof Zippor[was] kingof the Moabitesat that time.5He sentmessengerstherefore unto Balaamthe sonof Beorto Pethor,which [is] by the riverof the landof the childrenof his people,to callhim, saying,Behold, there is a peoplecome outfrom Egypt:behold, they coverthe faceof the earth,and they abideover againstme:6Comenow therefore, I pray thee, curseme this people;for they [are] too mightyfor me: peradventure I shall prevail,[that] we may smitethem, and [that] I may drive them outof the land:for I wotthat he whom thou blessest[is] blessed,and he whom thou cursestis cursed.

7And the eldersof Moaband the eldersof Midiandepartedwith the rewards of divinationin their hand;and they cameunto Balaam,and spakeunto him the wordsof Balak.8And he saidunto them, Lodgehere this night,and I will bringyou wordagain,as the LORDshall speakunto me: and the princesof Moababodewith Balaam.9And Godcameunto Balaam,and said,What men[are] these with thee?10And Balaamsaidunto God,Balakthe sonof Zippor,kingof Moab,hath sentunto me, [saying],11Behold, [there is] a peoplecome outof Egypt,which covereththe faceof the earth:comenow, curseme them; peradventure I shall be ableto overcomethem, and drive them out.12And Godsaidunto Balaam,Thou shalt not gowith them; thou shalt not cursethe people:for they [are] blessed.13And Balaamrose upin the morning,and saidunto the princesof Balak,Getyou into your land:for the LORDrefusethto give me leaveto gowith you.14And the princesof Moabrose up,and they wentunto Balak,and said,Balaamrefusethto comewith us.

15And Balaksentyet againprinces,more,and more honourablethan they.16And they cameto Balaam,and saidto him, Thus saithBalakthe sonof Zippor,Let nothing, I pray thee, hinderthee from comingunto me:17For I will promotethee unto verygreathonour,and I will dowhatsoever thou sayestunto me: cometherefore, I pray thee, curseme this people.18And Balaamansweredand saidunto the servantsof Balak,If Balakwould giveme his housefullof silverand gold,I cannotgo beyondthe wordof the LORDmy God,to dolessor more.19Now therefore, I pray you, tarryye also here this night,that I may knowwhat the LORDwill sayunto me more.20And Godcameunto Balaamat night,and saidunto him, If the mencometo callthee, rise up,[and] gowith them; but yetthe wordwhich I shall sayunto thee, that shalt thou do.

21And Balaamrose upin the morning,and saddledhis ass,and wentwith the princesof Moab.

The Angel and Balaam's Donkey

22And God'sangerwas kindledbecause he went:and the angelof the LORDstoodin the wayfor an adversaryagainst him. Now he was ridingupon his ass,and his twoservants[were] with him.23And the asssawthe angelof the LORDstandingin the way,and his sworddrawnin his hand:and the assturned asideout of the way,and wentinto the field:and Balaamsmotethe ass,to turnher into the way.24But the angelof the LORDstoodin a pathof the vineyards,a wall[being] on this side, and a wallon that side.25And when the asssawthe angelof the LORD,she thrustherself unto the wall,and crushedBalaam'sfootagainst the wall:and he smoteher again.26And the angelof the LORDwentfurther,and stoodin a narrowplace,where [was] no wayto turneither to the right handor to the left.27And when the asssawthe angelof the LORD,she fell downunder Balaam:and Balaam'sangerwas kindled,and he smotethe asswith a staff.28And the LORDopenedthe mouthof the ass,and she saidunto Balaam,What have I doneunto thee, that thou hast smittenme these threetimes?29And Balaamsaidunto the ass,Because thou hast mockedme: I wouldthere werea swordin mine hand,for now would I killthee.30And the asssaidunto Balaam,[Am] not I thine ass,upon which thou hast riddenever since [I was] thine unto this day?was I everwontto do sounto thee? And he said,Nay.

31Then the LORDopenedthe eyesof Balaam,and he sawthe angelof the LORDstandingin the way,and his sworddrawnin his hand:and he bowed downhis head, and fell flaton his face.32And the angelof the LORDsaidunto him, Wherefore hast thou smittenthine assthese threetimes?behold, I went outto withstandthee, because [thy] wayis perversebefore me:33And the asssawme, and turnedfrom methese threetimes:unlessshe had turnedfrom me,surely now also I had slainthee, and saved her alive.34And Balaamsaidunto the angelof the LORD,I have sinned;for I knewnot that thou stoodestin the wayagainstme: now therefore, if it displease thee,I will get me back again.35And the angelof the LORDsaidunto Balaam,Gowith the men:but onlythe wordthat I shall speakunto thee, that thou shalt speak.So Balaamwentwith the princesof Balak.

36And when Balakheardthat Balaamwas come,he went outto meethim unto a cityof Moab,which [is] in the borderof Arnon,which [is] in the utmostcoast.37And Balaksaidunto Balaam,Did I not earnestlysendunto thee to callthee? wherefore camestthou not unto me? am I not ableindeedto promote thee to honour?38And Balaamsaidunto Balak,Lo, I am comeunto thee: have I now any powerat allto sayany thing?the wordthat Godputtethin my mouth,that shall I speak.39And Balaamwentwith Balak,and they cameunto Kirjathhuzoth.40And Balakofferedoxenand sheep,and sentto Balaam,and to the princesthat [were] with him.

41And it came to pass on the morrow,that BalaktookBalaam,and brought him upinto the high placesof Baal,that thence he might seethe utmost[part] of the people.
