Spies Sent to Canaan

(Deuteronomy 1:19-25)

1And the LORDspakeunto Moses,saying,2Sendthou men,that they may searchthe landof Canaan,which I giveunto the childrenof Israel:of everytribeof their fathersshall ye senda man,every one a ruleramong them.3And Mosesby the commandmentof the LORDsentthem from the wildernessof Paran:all those men[were]headsof the childrenof Israel.4And these [were] their names:of the tribeof Reuben,Shammuathe sonof Zaccur.5Of the tribeof Simeon,Shaphatthe sonof Hori.6Of the tribeof Judah,Calebthe sonof Jephunneh.7Of the tribeof Issachar,Igalthe sonof Joseph.8Of the tribeof Ephraim,Osheathe sonof Nun.9Of the tribeof Benjamin,Paltithe sonof Raphu.10Of the tribeof Zebulun,Gaddielthe sonof Sodi.11Of the tribeof Joseph,[namely], of the tribeof Manasseh,Gaddithe sonof Susi.12Of the tribeof Dan,Ammielthe sonof Gemalli.13Of the tribeof Asher,Sethurthe sonof Michael.14Of the tribeof Naphtali,Nahbithe sonof Vophsi.15Of the tribeof Gad,Geuelthe sonof Machi.16These [are] the namesof the menwhich Mosessentto spy outthe land.And MosescalledOsheathe sonof NunJehoshua.

Instructions to the Spies

17And Mosessentthem to spy outthe landof Canaan,and saidunto them, Get you upthis [way] southward,and go upinto the mountain:18And seethe land,what it [is]; and the peoplethat dwelleththerein, whether they [be] strongor weak,fewor many;19And what the land[is] that they dwell in,whether it [be] goodor bad;and what cities[they be] that they dwellin,whether in tents,or in strong holds;20And what the land[is], whether it [be] fator lean,whether there bewoodtherein, or not. And be ye of good courage,and bringof the fruitof the land.Now the time[was] the timeof the firstripegrapes.

The Spies Explore Canaan

21So they went up,and searchedthe landfrom the wildernessof Zinunto Rehob,as men cometo Hamath.22And they ascendedby the south,and cameunto Hebron;where Ahiman,Sheshai,and Talmai,the childrenof Anak,[were]. (Now Hebronwas builtsevenyearsbeforeZoanin Egypt.)

23And they cameunto the brookof Eshcol,and cut downfrom thence a branchwith oneclusterof grapes,and they bareit between twoupon a staff;and [they brought] of the pomegranates,and of the figs.24The placewas calledthe brookEshcol,because ofthe cluster of grapeswhich the childrenof Israelcut downfrom thence.

The Reports of the Spies

25And they returnedfrom searchingof the landafterfortydays.26And they wentand cameto Moses,and to Aaron,and to all the congregationof the childrenof Israel,unto the wildernessof Paran,to Kadesh;and brought backwordunto them, and unto all the congregation,and shewedthem the fruitof the land.27And they toldhim, and said,We cameunto the landwhither thou sentestus, and surely it flowethwith milkand honey;and this [is] the fruitof it.28Neverthelessthe people[be] strongthat dwellin the land,and the cities[are] walled,[and] verygreat:and moreover we sawthe childrenof Anakthere.29The Amalekitesdwellin the landof the south:and the Hittites,and the Jebusites,and the Amorites,dwellin the mountains:and the Canaanitesdwellby the sea,and by the coastof Jordan.

30And Calebstilledthe peoplebefore Moses,and said,Let us go upat once,and possessit; for we are well ableto overcomeit.31But the menthat went upwith him said,We be not ableto go upagainst the people;for they [are] strongerthan we.32And they brought upan evil reportof the landwhich they had searchedunto the childrenof Israel,saying,The land,through which we have goneto searchit, [is] a landthat eateth upthe inhabitantsthereof; and all the peoplethat we sawin it[are] menof a great stature.33And there we sawthe giants,the sonsof Anak,[which come] of the giants:and we were in our own sightas grasshoppers,and so we were in their sight.
