The Lord of the Sabbath
(1 Samuel 21:1-9;Mark 2:23-28;Luke 6:1-5)
1AtthattimeJesuswenton the sabbath daythroughthe corn;andhisdiscipleswere an hungred,andbeganto pluckthe ears of corn,andto eat.2Butwhen the Phariseessaw[it], they saidunto him,Behold,thydisciplesdothat whichisnotlawfulto douponthe sabbath day.3Buthe saidunto them,Have yenotreadwhatDaviddid,whenhewas an hungred,andtheythat were with him;4Howhe entered intothe houseof God,anddid eatthe shewbread,whichwasnotlawfulfor himto eat,neither forthem whichwere with him,butonlyfor the priests?5Orhave yenotreadinthe law,how thaton the sabbath daysthe priestsinthe templeprofanethe sabbath,andareblameless?6ButI sayunto you,Thatin this placeis [one]greater thanthe temple.7Butifye had knownwhat[this] meaneth,I will havemercy,andnotsacrifice,ye wouldnothave condemnedthe guiltless.

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

9Andwhen he was departedthence,he wentintotheirsynagogue:10And,behold,there wasa manwhich had[his] handwithered.Andthey askedhim,saying,Is it lawfulto healon the sabbath days?thatthey might accusehim.11Andhe saidunto them,Whatmanshall there beamongyou,thatshall haveonesheep,andifitfallintoa piton the sabbath day,will henotlay holdon it,andlift [it] out?12How muchthenis a manbetter thana sheep?Whereforeit is lawfulto dowellon the sabbath days.13Thensaithhe to the man,Stretch forththinehand.Andhe stretched [it] forth;andit was restoredwhole,like asthe other.14Thenthe Phariseeswent out,and helda councilagainsthim,howthey might destroyhim.

15Butwhen Jesusknew[it], he withdrew himselffrom thence:andgreatmultitudesfollowedhim,andhe healedthemall;16Andchargedthemthatthey shouldnotmakehimknown:17Thatit might be fulfilledwhichwas spokenbyEsaiasthe prophet,saying,
18Beholdmyservant,whomI have chosen;mybeloved,inwhommysoulis well pleased:I will putmyspirituponhim,andhe shall shewjudgmentto the Gentiles.
19He shallnotstrive,norcry;neithershall any manhearhisvoiceinthe streets.
20A bruisedreedshall henotbreak,andsmokingflaxshall henotquench,tillhe send forthjudgmentuntovictory.
21Andinhisnameshallthe Gentilestrust.
A House Divided

22Thenwas broughtunto himone possessed with a devil,blind,anddumb:andhe healedhim,insomuch thatthe blindanddumbbothspakeandsaw.23Andallthe peoplewere amazed,andsaid,Isnotthisthe sonof David?24Butwhen the Phariseesheard[it], they said,This[fellow] dothnotcast outdevils,butbyBeelzebubthe princeof the devils.
25AndJesusknewtheirthoughts,and saidunto them,Everykingdomdividedagainstitselfis brought to desolation;andeverycityorhousedividedagainstitselfshallnotstand:26AndifSatancast outSatan,he is dividedagainsthimself;howshallthenhiskingdomstand?27AndifIbyBeelzebubcast outdevils,bywhomdo yourchildrencast [them] out?thereforetheyshall beyourjudges.28ButifIcast outdevilsbythe Spiritof God,thenthe kingdomof Godis comeuntoyou.29Orelse howcanoneenterintoa strong man'shouse,andspoilhisgoods,excepthe firstbindthe strong man?andthenhe will spoilhishouse.
30He that isnotwithmeisagainstme;andhe that gatherethnotwithmescattereth abroad.
The Unpardonable Sin

31WhereforeI sayunto you,All manner ofsinandblasphemyshall be forgivenunto men:butthe blasphemy[against] the [Holy] Ghostshallnotbe forgivenunto men.32Andwhosoeverspeaketha wordagainstthe Sonof man,it shall be forgivenhim:butwhosoeverspeakethagainstthe HolyGhost,it shallnotbe forgivenhim,neitherinthisworld,neitherinthe [world] to come.
A Tree Recognized by its Fruit
