Philistine and Ammonite Oppression 6And the childrenof Israeldidevilagainin the sightof the LORD,and servedBaalim,and Ashtaroth,and the godsof Syria,and the godsof Zidon,and the godsof Moab,and the godsof the childrenof Ammon,and the godsof the Philistines,and forsookthe LORD,and servednot him.7And the angerof the LORDwas hotagainst Israel,and he soldthem into the handsof the Philistines,and into the handsof the childrenof Ammon.8And that yearthey vexedand oppressedthe childrenof Israel:eighteenyears,all the childrenof Israelthat [were] on the other sideJordanin the landof the Amorites,which [is] in Gilead.9Moreover the childrenof Ammonpassed overJordanto fightalso against Judah,and against Benjamin,and against the houseof Ephraim;so that Israelwas soredistressed. 10And the childrenof Israelcriedunto the LORD,saying,We have sinnedagainst thee, both because we have forsakenour God,and also servedBaalim.11And the LORDsaidunto the childrenof Israel,[Did] not [I deliver you] from the Egyptians,and from the Amorites,from the childrenof Ammon,and from the Philistines?12The Zidoniansalso, and the Amalekites,and the Maonites,did oppressyou; and ye criedto me, and I deliveredyou out of their hand.13Yet ye have forsakenme, and servedothergods:wherefore I will deliveryou no more.14Goand cryunto the godswhich ye have chosen;let themdeliveryou in the timeof your tribulation.15And the childrenof Israelsaidunto the LORD,We have sinned:dothou unto us whatsoever seemethgoodunto thee; deliverus only, we pray thee, this day.16And they put awaythe strangegodsfrom amongthem, and servedthe LORD:and his soulwas grievedfor the miseryof Israel. 17Then the childrenof Ammonwere gathered together,and encampedin Gilead.And the childrenof Israelassembled themselves together,and encampedin Mizpeh.18And the people[and] princesof Gileadsaidoneto another,What man[is he] that will beginto fightagainst the childrenof Ammon?he shall be headover all the inhabitantsof Gilead. |
