Job Laments his Birth

Afterthis openedJobhis mouth,and cursedhis day.2And Jobspake,and said,

Let the dayperishwherein I was born,and the night[in which] it was said,There is a man childconceived.

Let that daybe darkness;let not Godregardit from above,neither let the lightshineupon it.

Let darknessand the shadow of deathstainit; let a clouddwellupon it; let the blacknessof the dayterrifyit.

As [for] that night,let darknessseizeupon it; let it not be joinedunto the daysof the year,let it not comeinto the numberof the months.

Lo, let that nightbe solitary,let no joyful voicecometherein.

Let them curseit that cursethe day,who are readyto raise uptheir mourning.

Let the starsof the twilightthereof be dark;let it lookfor light,but [have] none; neither let it seethe dawningof the day:

Because it shut not upthe doorsof my [mother's] womb,nor hidsorrowfrom mine eyes.

Why diedI not from the womb?[why] did I [not] give up the ghostwhen I came outof the belly?

Why did the kneespreventme? or why the breaststhat I should suck?

For now should I have lain stilland been quiet,I should have slept:then had I been at rest,

With kingsand counsellorsof the earth,which builtdesolate placesfor themselves;

Or with princesthat had gold,who filledtheir houseswith silver:

Or as an hiddenuntimely birthI had not been; as infants[which] never sawlight.

There the wickedcease[from] troubling;and there the wearybe at rest.

[There] the prisonersresttogether;they hearnot the voiceof the oppressor.

The smalland greatare there; and the servant[is] freefrom his master.

Wherefore is lightgivento him that is in misery,and lifeunto the bitter[in] soul;

Which longfor death,but it [cometh] not; and digfor it more than for hid treasures;

Which rejoiceexceedingly,[and] are glad,when they can findthe grave?

[Why is light given] to a manwhose wayis hid,and whom Godhath hedged in?

For my sighingcomethbeforeI eat,and my roaringsare poured outlike the waters.

For the thing which I greatlyfearedis comeupon me, and that which I was afraidof is comeunto me.

I was not in safety,neither had I rest,neither was I quiet;yet troublecame.
