Jeremiah's Message at the Temple Gate

1The wordthat came to Jeremiahfrom the LORD,saying,2Standin the gateof the LORD'Shouse,and proclaimthere this word,and say,Hearthe wordof the LORD,all [ye of] Judah,that enter inat these gatesto worshipthe LORD.3Thus saiththe LORDof hosts,the Godof Israel,Amendyour waysand your doings,and I will cause you to dwellin this place.4Trustye not in lyingwords,saying,The templeof the LORD,The templeof the LORD,The templeof the LORD,[are] these.5For if ye throughlyamendyour waysand your doings;if ye throughlyexecutejudgmentbetween a manand his neighbour;6[If] ye oppressnot the stranger,the fatherless,and the widow,and shednot innocentbloodin this place,neither walkafterothergodsto your hurt:7Then will I cause you to dwellin this place,in the landthat I gaveto your fathers,foreverand ever.

8Behold, ye trustin lyingwords,that cannot profit.9Will ye steal,murder,and commit adultery,and swearfalsely,and burn incenseunto Baal,and walkafterothergodswhom ye knownot;10And comeand standbeforeme in this house,which is calledby my name,and say,We are deliveredto doall these abominations?11Is this house,which is calledby my name,become a denof robbersin your eyes?Behold, even I have seen[it], saiththe LORD.

12But goye now unto my placewhich [was] in Shiloh,where I setmy nameat the first,and seewhat I didto it forthe wickednessof my peopleIsrael.13And now, because ye have doneall these works,saiththe LORD,and I spakeunto you, rising up earlyand speaking,but ye heardnot; and I calledyou, but ye answerednot;14Therefore will I dounto [this] house,which is calledby my name,wherein ye trust,and unto the placewhich I gaveto you and to your fathers,as I have doneto Shiloh.15And I will cast you outof my sight,as I have cast outall your brethren,[even] the whole seedof Ephraim.

Judah's Idolatry Persists

16Therefore praynot thou for this people,neither lift upcrynor prayerfor them,neither make intercessionto me: for I will not hearthee.17Seestthou not what they doin the citiesof Judahand in the streetsof Jerusalem?18The childrengatherwood,and the fatherskindlethe fire,and the womenknead[their] dough,to makecakesto the queenof heaven,and to pour outdrink offeringsunto othergods,that they may provoke me to anger.19Do they provoke me to anger?saiththe LORD:[do they] not [provoke] themselves to the confusionof their own faces?20Therefore thus saiththe LordGOD;Behold, mine angerand my furyshall be poured outupon this place,upon man,and upon beast,and upon the treesof the field,and upon the fruitof the ground;and it shall burn,and shall not be quenched.

21Thus saiththe LORDof hosts,the Godof Israel;Putyour burnt offeringsunto your sacrifices,and eatflesh.22For I spakenot unto your fathers,nor commandedthem in the daythat I brought them outof the landof Egypt,concerningburnt offeringsor sacrifices:23But this thingcommandedI them, saying,Obeymy voice,and I will be your God,and ye shall be my people:and walkye in all the waysthat I have commandedyou, that it may be wellunto you.24But they hearkenednot, nor inclinedtheir ear,but walkedin the counsels[and] in the imaginationof their evilheart,and went backward,and not forward.25Since the daythat your fatherscame forth outof the landof Egyptunto this dayI have even sentunto you all my servantsthe prophets,dailyrising up earlyand sending[them]:26Yet they hearkenednot unto me, nor inclinedtheir ear,but hardenedtheir neck:they did worsethan their fathers.

27Therefore thou shalt speakall these wordsunto them; but they will not hearkento thee: thou shalt also callunto them; but they will not answerthee.28But thou shalt sayunto them, This [is] a nationthat obeyethnot the voiceof the LORDtheir God,nor receivethcorrection:truthis perished,and is cut offfrom their mouth.

29Cut offthine hair,[O Jerusalem], and cast [it] away,and take upa lamentationon high places;for the LORDhath rejectedand forsakenthe generationof his wrath.

The Valley of Slaughter

30For the childrenof Judahhave doneevilin my sight,saiththe LORD:they have settheir abominationsin the housewhich is calledby my name,to polluteit.31And they have builtthe high placesof Tophet,which [is] in the valleyof the sonof Hinnom,to burntheir sonsand their daughtersin the fire;which I commanded[them] not, neither cameit into my heart.

32Therefore, behold, the dayscome,saiththe LORD,that it shall no more be calledTophet,nor the valleyof the sonof Hinnom,but the valleyof slaughter:for they shall buryin Tophet,till there be noplace.33And the carcasesof this peopleshall be meatfor the fowlsof the heaven,and for the beastsof the earth;and none shall fray [them] away.34Then will I cause to ceasefrom the citiesof Judah,and from the streetsof Jerusalem,the voiceof mirth,and the voiceof gladness,the voiceof the bridegroom,and the voiceof the bride:for the landshall be desolate.
