God's Covenant with Abram

(Romans 4:1-12;Galatians 3:1-9;Hebrews 11:8-19;James 2:14-26)

1Afterthese thingsthe wordof the LORDcameunto Abramin a vision,saying,Fearnot, Abram:I [am] thy shield,[and] thy exceedinggreatreward.

2And Abramsaid,LordGOD,what wilt thou giveme, seeing I gochildless,and the stewardof my house[is] thisEliezerof Damascus?3And Abramsaid,Behold, to me thou hast givennoseed:and, lo, one bornin my houseis mine heir.4And, behold, the wordof the LORD[came] unto him, saying,This shall not be thine heir;but he that shall come forthout of thine own bowelsshall be thine heir.5And he brought him forthabroad,and said,Looknow toward heaven,and tellthe stars,if thou be ableto numberthem: and he saidunto him, Soshall thy seedbe.6And he believedin the LORD;and he countedit to him for righteousness.7And he saidunto him, I [am] the LORDthat brought thee outof Urof the Chaldees,to givethee this landto inheritit.

God Confirms His Promise

(Numbers 34:1-15;Romans 4:13-25)

8And he said,LordGOD,wherebyshall I knowthat I shall inherit it?9And he saidunto him, Takeme an heiferof three years old,and a she goatof three years old,and a ramof three years old,and a turtledove,and a young pigeon.10And he tookunto him all these, and dividedthem in the midst,and laideachpieceone againstanother:but the birdsdividedhe not.11And when the fowlscame downupon the carcases,Abramdrove them away.

12And when the sunwas going down,a deep sleepfellupon Abram;and, lo, an horrorof greatdarknessfellupon him.13And he saidunto Abram,Knowof a suretythat thy seedshall be a strangerin a land[that is] not theirs, and shall servethem; and they shall afflictthem fourhundredyears;14And also that nation,whom they shall serve,will I judge:and afterwardshall they come outwith greatsubstance.15And thou shalt goto thy fathersin peace;thou shalt be buriedin a goodold age.16But in the fourthgenerationthey shall come hitheragain:for the iniquityof the Amorites[is] not yetfull.

17And it came to pass, that, when the sunwent down,and it was dark,behold a smokingfurnace,and a burninglampthat passedbetweenthose pieces.

18In the samedaythe LORDmadea covenantwith Abram,saying,Unto thy seedhave I giventhis land,from the riverof Egyptunto the greatriver,the riverEuphrates:

19The Kenites,and the Kenizzites,and the Kadmonites,20And the Hittites,and the Perizzites,and the Rephaims,21And the Amorites,and the Canaanites,and the Girgashites,and the Jebusites.
