The Suffering Servant
(Matthew 26:57-68;Mark 14:53-65;John 18:19-24;1 Peter 2:21-25)
1Who hath believedour report?and to whom is the armof the LORDrevealed?
2For he shall grow upbeforehim as a tender plant, and as a rootout of a dryground:he hath no formnor comeliness;and when we shall seehim, [there is] no beautythat we should desirehim.
3He is despisedand rejectedof men;a manof sorrows, and acquaintedwith grief:and we hid as it were[our] facesfrom him; he was despised, and we esteemedhim not.
4Surelyhe hath borneour griefs,and carriedour sorrows:yet we did esteemhim stricken,smittenof God,and afflicted.
5But he [was] woundedfor our transgressions,[he was] bruisedfor our iniquities:the chastisementof our peace[was] upon him; and with his stripeswe are healed.
6All we like sheephave gone astray;we have turnedevery oneto his own way;and the LORDhath laidon him the iniquityof us all.
7He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he openednot his mouth:he is broughtas a lambto the slaughter, and as a sheepbeforeher shearersis dumb,so he openethnot his mouth.
8He was takenfrom prisonand from judgment:and who shall declarehis generation?for he was cut offout of the landof the living:for the transgressionof my peoplewas he stricken.
A Grave Assigned
(Matthew 27:57-61;Mark 15:42-47;Luke 23:50-56;John 19:38-42)
9And he madehis gravewith the wicked, and with the richin his death;because he had doneno violence, neither [was any] deceitin his mouth.
10Yet it pleasedthe LORDto bruisehim; he hath put [him] to grief:when thou shalt makehis soulan offering for sin,he shall see[his] seed,he shall prolong[his] days, and the pleasureof the LORDshall prosperin his hand.
11He shall seeof the travailof his soul,[and] shall be satisfied:by his knowledgeshall my righteousservantjustifymany;for he shall beartheir iniquities.
12Therefore will I dividehim [a portion] with the great, and he shall dividethe spoilwith the strong;because he hath poured outhis soulunto death:and he was numberedwith the transgressors;and he barethe sinof many, and made intercessionfor the transgressors.
