Jacob Settles in Goshen

1Then Josephcameand toldPharaoh,and said,My fatherand my brethren,and their flocks,and their herds,and all that they have, are come outof the landof Canaan;and, behold, they [are] in the landof Goshen.2And he tooksomeof his brethren,[even] fivemen,and presentedthem untoPharaoh.3And Pharaohsaidunto his brethren,What [is] your occupation?And they saidunto Pharaoh,Thy servants[are] shepherds,both we, [and] also our fathers.4They saidmoreover unto Pharaoh,For to sojournin the landare we come;for thy servantshave no pasturefor their flocks;for the famine[is] sorein the landof Canaan:now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servantsdwellin the landof Goshen.5And Pharaohspakeunto Joseph,saying,Thy fatherand thy brethrenare comeunto thee:6The landof Egypt[is] before thee;in the bestof the landmakethy fatherand brethrento dwell;in the landof Goshenlet them dwell:and if thou knowest[any] menof activityamong them, then make themrulersover my cattle.

7And Josephbrought inJacobhis father,and set himbeforePharaoh:and JacobblessedPharaoh.8And Pharaohsaidunto Jacob,Howold[art] thou?9And Jacobsaidunto Pharaoh,The daysof the yearsof my pilgrimage[are] an hundredand thirtyyears:fewand evilhave the daysof the yearsof my lifebeen, and have not attainedunto the daysof the yearsof the lifeof my fathersin the daysof their pilgrimage.10And JacobblessedPharaoh,and went outfrom beforePharaoh.11And Josephplacedhis fatherand his brethren,and gavethem a possessionin the landof Egypt,in the bestof the land,in the landof Rameses,as Pharaohhad commanded.12And Josephnourishedhis father,and his brethren,and all his father'shousehold,with bread,accordingto [their] families.

Joseph's Leadership in Famine

13And [there was] no breadin all the land;for the famine[was] verysore,so that the landof Egyptand [all] the landof Canaanfaintedby reasonof the famine.14And Josephgathered upall the moneythat was foundin the landof Egypt,and in the landof Canaan,for the cornwhich they bought:and Josephbroughtthe moneyinto Pharaoh'shouse.15And when moneyfailedin the landof Egypt,and in the landof Canaan,all the Egyptianscameunto Joseph,and said,Giveus bread:for why should we diein thy presence? for the moneyfaileth.16And Josephsaid,Giveyour cattle;and I will giveyou for your cattle,if moneyfail.17And they broughttheir cattleunto Joseph:and Josephgavethem bread[in exchange] for horses,and for the flocks,and for the cattleof the herds,and for the asses:and he fedthem with breadfor all their cattlefor that year.18When that yearwas ended,they cameunto him the secondyear,and saidunto him, We will not hide[it] from my lord,how that our moneyis spent;my lordalso hathour herdsof cattle;there is not ought leftin the sightof my lord,but our bodies,and our lands:19Wherefore shall we diebefore thine eyes,both we and our land?buyus and our landfor bread,and we and our landwill be servantsunto Pharaoh:and give[us] seed,that we may live,and not die,that the landbe not desolate.

20And Josephboughtall the landof Egyptfor Pharaoh;for the Egyptianssoldevery manhis field,because the famineprevailedover them: so the landbecame Pharaoh's.21And as for the people,he removedthem to citiesfrom [one] endof the bordersof Egypteven to the [other] endthereof.22Only the landof the priestsbought henot; for the priestshad a portion[assigned them] of Pharaoh,and did eattheir portionwhich Pharaohgavethem: wherefore they soldnot their lands.23Then Josephsaidunto the people,Behold, I have boughtyou this dayand your landfor Pharaoh:lo,[here is] seedfor you, and ye shall sowthe land.24And it shall come to pass in the increase,that ye shall givethe fifth[part] unto Pharaoh,and fourpartsshall be your own, for seedof the field,and for your food,and for them of your households,and for foodfor your little ones.25And they said,Thou hast saved our lives:let us findgracein the sightof my lord,and we will be Pharaoh'sservants.26And Josephmadeit a lawover the landof Egyptunto this day,[that] Pharaohshould have the fifth[part]; exceptthe landof the priestsonly, [which] became not Pharaoh's.

27And Israeldweltin the landof Egypt,in the countryof Goshen;and they had possessionstherein, and grew,and multipliedexceedingly.28And Jacoblivedin the landof Egyptseventeenyears:so the whole ageof Jacobwas an hundredfortyand sevenyears.

29And the timedrew nighthat Israelmust die:and he calledhis sonJoseph,and saidunto him, If now I have foundgracein thy sight,put,I pray thee, thy handunder my thigh,and dealkindlyand trulywith me; buryme not, I pray thee, in Egypt:30But I will liewith my fathers,and thou shalt carryme out of Egypt,and buryme in their buryingplace.And he said,I will doas thou hast said.31And he said,Swearunto me. And he swareunto him. And Israelbowedhimself upon the bed'shead.
