Joseph's Dreams

1And Jacobdweltin the landwherein his fatherwas a stranger,in the landof Canaan.2These [are] the generationsof Jacob.Joseph,[being] seventeenyearsold,was feedingthe flockwith his brethren;and the lad[was] with the sonsof Bilhah,and with the sonsof Zilpah,his father'swives:and Josephbroughtunto his fathertheir evilreport.3Now IsraellovedJosephmore than all his children,because he [was] the sonof his old age:and he madehim a coatof [many] colours.4And when his brethrensawthat their fatherlovedhim more than all his brethren,they hatedhim, and couldnot speakpeaceablyunto him.

5And Josephdreameda dream,and he told[it] his brethren:and they hatedhim yet the more.6And he saidunto them, Hear,I pray you, this dreamwhich I have dreamed:7For, behold, we [were] bindingsheavesin the field,and, lo, my sheafarose,and also stood upright;and, behold, your sheavesstood round about,and made obeisanceto my sheaf.8And his brethrensaidto him, Shalt thou indeedreignover us? or shalt thou indeedhave dominionover us? And they hatedhim yet the morefor his dreams,and for his words.

9And he dreamedyet anotherdream,and toldit his brethren,and said,Behold, I have dreameda dreammore; and, behold, the sunand the moonand the elevenstarsmade obeisanceto me.10And he told[it] to his father,and to his brethren:and his fatherrebukedhim, and saidunto him, What [is] this dreamthat thou hast dreamed?Shall I and thy motherand thy brethrenindeedcometo bow downourselves to thee to the earth?11And his brethrenenviedhim; but his fatherobservedthe saying.

Joseph Sold by his Brothers

12And his brethrenwentto feedtheir father'sflockin Shechem.13And Israelsaidunto Joseph,Do not thy brethrenfeed[the flock] in Shechem?come,and I will send theeunto them. And he saidto him, Here [am I].14And he saidto him, Go,I pray thee, seewhether it be wellwith thy brethren,and wellwith the flocks;and bringme wordagain.So he senthim out of the valeof Hebron,and he cameto Shechem.

15And a certain manfound him,and, behold, [he was] wanderingin the field:and the manasked him,saying,What seekestthou?16And he said,I seekmy brethren:tellme, I pray thee, wherethey feed[their flocks].17And the mansaid,They are departedhence;for I heardthem say,Let us goto Dothan.And Josephwentafterhis brethren,and foundthem in Dothan.

18And when they sawhim afar off,even before he came nearunto them, they conspiredagainst him to slayhim.19And they saidoneto another,Behold, thisdreamercometh.20Comenow therefore, and let us slayhim, and casthim into somepit,and we will say,Some evilbeasthath devouredhim: and we shall seewhat will become of his dreams.21And Reubenheard[it], and he deliveredhim out of their hands;and said,Let us not killhim.22And Reubensaidunto them, Shedno blood,[but] casthim into this pitthat [is] in the wilderness,and layno handupon him; that he might ridhim out of their hands,to deliverhim to his fatheragain.23And it came to pass, when Josephwas comeunto his brethren,that they striptJosephout ofhis coat,[his] coatof [many] coloursthat [was] on him;24And they tookhim, and casthim into a pit:and the pit[was] empty,[there was] no waterin it.

25And they sat downto eatbread:and they lifted uptheir eyesand looked,and, behold, a companyof Ishmeelitescamefrom Gileadwith their camelsbearingspiceryand balmand myrrh,goingto carry [it] downto Egypt.26And Judahsaidunto his brethren,What profit[is it] if we slayour brother,and concealhis blood?27Come,and let us sellhim to the Ishmeelites,and let not our handbe upon him; for he [is] our brother[and] our flesh.And his brethrenwere content.28Then there passedby Midianitesmerchantmen;and they drewand lifted upJosephout of the pit,and soldJosephto the Ishmeelitesfor twenty[pieces] of silver:and they broughtJosephinto Egypt.

29And Reubenreturnedunto the pit;and, behold, Joseph[was] not in the pit;and he renthis clothes.30And he returnedunto his brethren,and said,The child[is] not; and I, whithershall I go?

Jacob Mourns Joseph

31And they tookJoseph'scoat,and killeda kidof the goats,and dippedthe coatin the blood;32And they sentthe coatof [many] colours,and they brought[it] to their father;and said,This have we found:knownow whether it [be] thy son'scoator no.33And he knew it,and said,[It is] my son'scoat;an evilbeasthath devouredhim; Josephis without doubtrent in pieces.34And Jacobrenthis clothes,and putsackclothupon his loins,and mournedfor his sonmanydays.35And all his sonsand all his daughtersrose upto comforthim; but he refusedto be comforted;and he said,For I will go downinto the graveunto my sonmourning.Thus his fatherweptfor him.36And the Midianitessoldhim into Egyptunto Potiphar,an officerof Pharaoh's,[and] captainof the guard.
