God's Promise to Isaac

(Genesis 12:1-9)

1And there was a faminein the land,besidethe firstfaminethat was in the daysof Abraham.And Isaacwentunto Abimelechkingof the Philistinesunto Gerar.2And the LORDappearedunto him, and said,Go not downinto Egypt;dwellin the landwhich I shall tellthee of:3Sojournin this land,and I will be with thee, and will blessthee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed,I will giveall thesecountries,and I will performthe oathwhich I swareunto Abrahamthy father;4And I will makethy seedto multiplyas the starsof heaven,and will giveunto thy seedall thesecountries;and in thy seedshall all the nationsof the earthbe blessed;5Becausethat Abrahamobeyedmy voice,and keptmy charge,my commandments,my statutes,and my laws.

Isaac Deceives Abimelech

6And Isaacdweltin Gerar:7And the menof the placeasked[him] of his wife;and he said,She [is] my sister:for he fearedto say,[She is] my wife;lest, [said he], the menof the placeshould killme for Rebekah;because she [was] fairto look upon.8And it came to pass, when he had been there a longtime,that Abimelechkingof the Philistineslooked outata window,and saw,and, behold, Isaac[was] sportingwith Rebekahhis wife.9And AbimelechcalledIsaac,and said,Behold, of a suretyshe [is] thy wife:and how saidstthou, She [is] my sister?And Isaacsaidunto him, Because I said,Lest I diefor her.10And Abimelechsaid,What [is] this thou hast doneunto us? oneof the peoplemight lightlyhave lienwith thy wife,and thou shouldest have broughtguiltinessupon us.11And Abimelechchargedall [his] people,saying,He that toucheththis manor his wifeshall surelybe put to death.

Isaac's Prosperity

12Then Isaacsowedin that land,and receivedin the same yearan hundredfold:and the LORDblessedhim.13And the manwaxed great,and wentforward,and grewuntil he becameverygreat:14For he had possessionof flocks,and possessionof herds,and great storeof servants:and the Philistinesenviedhim.15For all the wellswhich his father'sservantshad diggedin the daysof Abrahamhis father,the Philistineshad stoppedthem, and filledthem with earth.16And Abimelechsaidunto Isaac,Gofrom us; for thou art muchmightierthan we.17And Isaacdepartedthence, and pitched his tentin the valleyof Gerar,and dweltthere.

18And Isaacdiggedagainthe wellsof water,which they had diggedin the daysof Abrahamhis father;for the Philistineshad stoppedthem afterthe deathof Abraham:and he calledtheir namesafter the namesby whichhis fatherhad calledthem.19And Isaac'sservantsdiggedin the valley,and foundthere a wellof springingwater.20And the herdmenof Gerardid strivewith Isaac'sherdmen,saying,The water[is] ours: and he calledthe nameof the wellEsek;because they strovewith him.21And they diggedanotherwell,and strovefor that also: and he calledthe name of itSitnah.22And he removedfrom thence, and diggedanotherwell;and for that they strovenot: and he calledthe name of itRehoboth;and he said,For nowthe LORDhath made roomfor us, and we shall be fruitfulin the land.

23And he went upfrom thence to Beersheba.

24And the LORDappearedunto him the same night,and said,I [am] the Godof Abrahamthy father:fearnot, for I [am] withthee, and will blessthee, and multiplythy seedfor my servantAbraham'ssake.

25And he buildedan altarthere, and calledupon the nameof the LORD,and pitchedhis tentthere: and there Isaac'sservantsdiggeda well.

Isaac's Covenant with Abimelech

26Then Abimelechwentto him from Gerar,and Ahuzzathone of his friends,and Phicholthe chief captainof his army.27And Isaacsaidunto them, Whereforecomeye to me, seeing ye hateme, and have sent me awayfrom you?28And they said,We sawcertainlythat the LORDwas with thee: and we said,Let there be now an oathbetwixtus, [even] betwixtus and thee, and let us makea covenantwith thee;29That thou wilt dous no hurt,as we have not touchedthee, and as we have doneunto thee nothing butgood,and have sent thee awayin peace:thou [art] nowthe blessedof the LORD.30And he madethem a feast,and they did eatand drink.31And they rose up betimesin the morning,and swareoneto another:and Isaacsent them away,and they departedfrom him in peace.32And it came to pass the same day,that Isaac'sservantscame,and toldhim concerningthe wellwhich they had digged,and saidunto him, We have foundwater.33And he calledit Shebah:therefore the nameof the city[is] Beershebaunto this day.

Esau's Wives

34And Esauwas fortyyearsoldwhen he tookto wifeJudiththe daughterof Beerithe Hittite,and Bashemaththe daughterof Elonthe Hittite:35Which were a griefof mindunto Isaacand to Rebekah.
