Ezra Goes Up to Jerusalem

1Now afterthese things,in the reignof Artaxerxeskingof Persia,Ezrathe sonof Seraiah,the sonof Azariah,the sonof Hilkiah,2The sonof Shallum,the sonof Zadok,the sonof Ahitub,3The sonof Amariah,the sonof Azariah,the sonof Meraioth,4The sonof Zerahiah,the sonof Uzzi,the sonof Bukki,5The sonof Abishua,the sonof Phinehas,the sonof Eleazar,the sonof Aaronthe chiefpriest:6This Ezrawent upfrom Babylon;and he [was] a readyscribein the lawof Moses,which the LORDGodof Israelhad given:and the kinggrantedhim all his request,according to the handof the LORDhis Godupon him.7And there went up[some] of the childrenof Israel,and of the priests,and the Levites,and the singers,and the porters,and the Nethinims,unto Jerusalem,in the seventhyearof Artaxerxesthe king.

8And he cameto Jerusalemin the fifthmonth,which [was] in the seventhyearof the king.9For upon the first[day] of the firstmonthbeganhe to go upfrom Babylon,and on the first[day] of the fifthmonthcamehe to Jerusalem,according to the goodhandof his Godupon him.10For Ezrahad preparedhis heartto seekthe lawof the LORD,and to do[it], and to teachin Israelstatutesand judgments.

Artaxerxes' Letter to Ezra

11Now this [is] the copyof the letterthat the kingArtaxerxesgaveunto Ezrathe priest,the scribe,[even] a scribeof the wordsof the commandmentsof the LORD,and of his statutesto Israel.12Artaxerxes,kingof kings,unto Ezrathe priest,a scribeof the lawof the Godof heaven,perfect[peace], and at such a time.13Imakea decree,that allthey ofthe peopleof Israel,and [of] his priestsand Levites,in my realm,which are minded of their own freewillto go upto Jerusalem,gowith thee.14Forasmuchasthou art sentofthe king,and of his sevencounsellors,to enquireconcerningJudahand Jerusalem,according to the lawof thy Godwhich [is] in thine hand;15And to carrythe silverand gold,which the kingand his counsellorshave freely offeredunto the Godof Israel,whosehabitation[is] in Jerusalem,16And allthe silverand goldthat thou canst findin allthe provinceof Babylon,withthe freewill offeringof the people,and of the priests,offering willinglyfor the houseof their Godwhich [is] in Jerusalem:17Thatthou mayest buyspeedilywith thismoneybullocks,rams,lambs,with their meat offeringsand their drink offerings,and offerthemuponthe altarof the houseof your Godwhich [is] in Jerusalem.18And whatsoevershall seem goodto thee, and tothy brethren,to dowith the restof the silverand the gold,that doafter the willof your God.19The vesselsalso that are giventhee for the serviceof the houseof thy God,[those] deliverthou beforethe Godof Jerusalem.20And whatsoever moreshall be needfulfor the houseof thy God,which thou shalt have occasionto bestow,bestow[it] out ofthe king'streasurehouse.

21And I,[even] IArtaxerxesthe king,do makea decreeto allthe treasurerswhich [are] beyondthe river,that whatsoever Ezrathe priest,the scribeof the lawof the Godof heaven,shall requireof you, it be donespeedily,22Untoan hundredtalentsof silver,and to an hundredmeasuresof wheat,and to an hundredbathsof wine,and to an hundredbathsof oil,and saltwithoutprescribing[how much].23Whatsoeveris commanded bythe Godof heaven,let it be diligentlydonefor the houseof the Godof heaven:forwhyshould there bewrathagainstthe realmof the kingand his sons?24Also we certifyyou, that touching anyof the priestsand Levites,singers,porters,Nethinims,or ministersof thishouseof God,it shall notbe lawfulto imposetoll,tribute,or custom,uponthem.

25And thou,Ezra,after the wisdomof thy God,that [is] in thine hand,setmagistratesand judges,which may judgeallthe peoplethat [are] beyondthe river,allsuch as knowthe lawsof thy God;and teachye them that know[them] not.26And whosoeverwill notdothe lawof thy God,and the lawof the king,let judgmentbeexecutedspeedilyupon him,whether[it be] unto death,orto banishment,orto confiscationof goods,or to imprisonment.

Ezra Praises God

27Blessed[be] the LORDGodof our fathers,which hath put[such a thing] as this in the king'sheart,to beautifythe houseof the LORDwhich [is] in Jerusalem:28And hath extendedmercyunto me beforethe king,and his counsellors,and before all the king'smightyprinces.And I was strengthenedas the handof the LORDmy God[was] upon me, and I gathered togetherout of Israelchief mento go upwith me.
