1Now in the twelfthmonth, that [is], the monthAdar,on the thirteenthdayof the same, when the king'scommandmentand his decreedrew nearto be put in execution,in the daythat the enemiesof the Jewshopedto have powerover them, (though it was turnedto the contrary, that the Jewshad ruleover them that hatedthem;)2The Jewsgathered themselves togetherin their citiesthroughout all the provincesof the kingAhasuerus,to layhandon such as soughttheir hurt:and no mancould withstandthem;for the fearof them fellupon all people.3And all the rulersof the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the deputies, and officersof the king, helpedthe Jews;because the fearof Mordecaifellupon them.4For Mordecai[was] greatin the king'shouse, and his famewent outthroughout all the provinces:for this manMordecaiwaxedgreater and greater.5Thus the Jewssmoteall their enemieswith the strokeof the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and didwhat they wouldunto those that hatedthem.6And in Shushanthe palacethe Jewsslewand destroyedfivehundredmen.7And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,8And Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,9And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha,10The tensonsof Hamanthe sonof Hammedatha, the enemyof the Jews, slewthey; but on the spoillaidthey not their hand.

11On that daythe numberof those that were slainin Shushanthe palacewas broughtbeforethe king.

Haman's Sons Hanged

12And the kingsaidunto Estherthe queen,The Jewshave slainand destroyedfivehundredmenin Shushanthe palace, and the tensonsof Haman;what have they donein the restof the king'sprovinces?now what [is] thy petition?and it shall be grantedthee: or what [is] thy requestfurther?and it shall be done.13Then saidEsther,If it pleasethe king, let it be grantedto the Jewswhich [are] in Shushanto doto morrowalso according unto this day'sdecree, and let Haman'stensonsbe hangedupon the gallows.14And the kingcommandedit so to be done:and the decreewas givenat Shushan;and they hangedHaman'stensons.15For the Jewsthat [were] in Shushangathered themselves togetheron the fourteenthdayalso of the monthAdar, and slewthreehundredmenat Shushan;but on the preythey laidnot their hand.

16But the otherJewsthat [were] in the king'sprovincesgathered themselves together, and stoodfor their lives, and had restfrom their enemies, and slewof their foesseventyand fivethousand, but they laidnot their handson the prey,17On the thirteenthdayof the monthAdar;and on the fourteenthday of the same restedthey, and madeit a dayof feastingand gladness.

The Feast of Purim Instituted

18But the Jewsthat [were] at Shushanassembled togetheron the thirteenth[day] thereof, and on the fourteenththereof; and on the fifteenth[day] of the same they rested, and madeit a dayof feastingand gladness.19Therefore the Jewsof the villages, that dweltin the unwalledtowns, madethe fourteenthdayof the monthAdar[a day of] gladnessand feasting, and a goodday, and of sendingportionsoneto another.

20And Mordecaiwrotethese things, and sentlettersunto all the Jewsthat [were] in all the provincesof the kingAhasuerus,[both] nighand far,21To stablish[this] among them, that they should keepthe fourteenthdayof the monthAdar, and the fifteenthdayof the same, yearly,22As the dayswherein the Jewsrestedfrom their enemies, and the monthwhich was turnedunto them from sorrowto joy,and from mourninginto a goodday:that they should makethem daysof feastingand joy,and of sendingportionsoneto another, and giftsto the poor.

23And the Jewsundertookto doas they had begun, and as Mordecaihad writtenunto them;24Because Hamanthe sonof Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemyof all the Jews, had devisedagainst the Jewsto destroythem, and had castPur,that [is], the lot,to consumethem, and to destroythem;25But when [Esther] camebeforethe king,he commandedby lettersthat his wickeddevice, which he devisedagainst the Jews, should returnupon his own head, and that he and his sonsshould be hangedon the gallows.26Wherefore they calledthese daysPurimafter the nameof Pur.Therefore for all the wordsof this letter, and [of that] which they had seenconcerning this matter, and which had comeunto them,27The Jewsordained, and tookupon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joinedthemselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keepthese twodaysaccording to their writing, and according to their [appointed] timeevery year;28And [that] these days[should be] rememberedand keptthroughoutevery generation, every family, every province, and every city;and [that] these daysof Purimshould not failfrom amongthe Jews, nor the memorialof them perishfrom their seed.

29Then Estherthe queen, the daughterof Abihail, and Mordecaithe Jew,wrotewith all authority,to confirmthis secondletterof Purim.30And he sentthe lettersunto all the Jews,to the hundredtwentyand sevenprovincesof the kingdomof Ahasuerus,[with] wordsof peaceand truth,31To confirmthese daysof Purimin their times[appointed], according as Mordecaithe Jewand Estherthe queenhad enjoinedthem, and as they had decreedfor themselvesand for their seed, the mattersof the fastingsand their cry.32And the decreeof Estherconfirmedthese mattersof Purim;and it was writtenin the book.
