The Greatest Commandment

(Matthew 22:34-40;Mark 12:28-34)

1Now these [are] the commandments,the statutes,and the judgments,which the LORDyour Godcommandedto teachyou, that ye might do[them] in the landwhither ye goto possessit:2That thou mightest fearthe LORDthy God,to keepall his statutesand his commandments,which I commandthee, thou, and thy son,and thy son'sson,all the daysof thy life;and that thy daysmay be prolonged.3Heartherefore, O Israel,and observeto do[it]; that it may be wellwith thee, and that ye may increasemightily,as the LORDGodof thy fathershath promisedthee, in the landthat flowethwith milkand honey.

4Hear,O Israel:The LORDour God[is] oneLORD:5And thou shalt lovethe LORDthy Godwith all thine heart,and with all thy soul,and with all thy might.6And these words,which I commandthee this day,shall be in thine heart:7And thou shalt teach them diligentlyunto thy children,and shalt talkof them when thou sittestin thine house,and when thou walkestby the way,and when thou liest down,and when thou risest up.8And thou shalt bindthem for a signupon thine hand,and they shall be as frontletsbetween thine eyes.9And thou shalt writethem upon the postsof thy house,and on thy gates.

10And it shall be, when the LORDthy Godshall have broughtthee into the landwhich he swareunto thy fathers,to Abraham,to Isaac,and to Jacob,to givethee greatand goodlycities,which thou buildedstnot,11And housesfullof all good[things], which thou filledstnot, and wellsdigged,which thou diggedstnot, vineyardsand olive trees,which thou plantedstnot; when thou shalt have eatenand be full;12[Then] bewarelest thou forgetthe LORD,which brought thee forthout of the landof Egypt,from the houseof bondage.13Thou shalt fearthe LORDthy God,and servehim, and shalt swearby his name.14Ye shall not goafterothergods,of the godsof the peoplewhich [are] round aboutyou;15(For the LORDthy God[is] a jealousGodamongyou) lest the angerof the LORDthy Godbe kindledagainst thee, and destroythee from off the faceof the earth.

16Ye shall not temptthe LORDyour God,as ye tempted[him] in Massah.17Ye shall diligentlykeepthe commandmentsof the LORDyour God,and his testimonies,and his statutes,which he hath commandedthee.18And thou shalt do[that which is] rightand goodin the sightof the LORD:that it may be wellwith thee, and that thou mayest go inand possessthe goodlandwhich the LORDswareunto thy fathers,19To cast outall thine enemiesfrom beforethee, as the LORDhath spoken.

(Ephesians 6:1-4)

20[And] when thy sonaskeththee in time to come,saying,What [mean] the testimonies,and the statutes,and the judgments,which the LORDour Godhath commandedyou?21Then thou shalt sayunto thy son,We were Pharaoh'sbondmenin Egypt;and the LORDbrought us outof Egyptwith a mightyhand:22And the LORDshewedsignsand wonders,greatand sore,upon Egypt,upon Pharaoh,and upon all his household,before our eyes:23And he brought us outfrom thence, that he might bring us in,to giveus the landwhich he swareunto our fathers.24And the LORDcommandedus to doall these statutes,to fearthe LORDour God,for our goodalways,that he might preserve us alive,as [it is] at this day.25And it shall be our righteousness,if we observeto doall thesecommandmentsbeforethe LORDour God,as he hath commandedus.
