An Exhortation to Obedience

(Leviticus 25:18-22;Deuteronomy 11:1-7;Deuteronomy 28:1-14)

1Now therefore hearken,O Israel, unto the statutesand unto the judgments, which I teachyou, for to do[them], that ye may live, and go inand possessthe landwhich the LORDGodof your fathersgivethyou.2Ye shall not addunto the wordwhich I commandyou, neither shall ye diminish[ought] from it, that ye may keepthe commandmentsof the LORDyour Godwhich I commandyou.3Your eyeshave seenwhat the LORDdidbecause of Baalpeor:for all the menthat followedBaalpeor, the LORDthy Godhath destroyedthem from amongyou.4But ye that did cleaveunto the LORDyour God[are] aliveevery one of you this day.

5Behold,I have taughtyou statutesand judgments, even asthe LORDmy Godcommandedme, that ye should doso inthe landwhither ye goto possessit.6Keeptherefore and do[them]; for this [is] your wisdomand your understandingin the sightof the nations, which shall hearall these statutes, and say,Surely this greatnation[is] a wiseand understandingpeople.7For what nation[is there so] great, who [hath] God[so] nighunto them, as the LORDour God[is] in all [things that] we callupon him [for]?8And what nation[is there so] great, that hath statutesand judgments[so] righteousas all this law, which I setbeforeyou this day?

9Only take heedto thyself, and keepthy souldiligently, lest thou forgetthe thingswhich thine eyeshave seen, and lest they departfrom thy heartall the daysof thy life:but teachthem thy sons, and thy sons'sons;10[Specially] the daythat thou stoodestbeforethe LORDthy Godin Horeb, when the LORDsaidunto me, Gatherme the peopletogether, and I will make them hearmy words, that they may learnto fearme all the daysthat they shall liveupon the earth, and [that] they may teachtheir children.11And ye came nearand stoodunder the mountain;and the mountainburnedwith fireunto the midstof heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.12And the LORDspakeunto you out of the midstof the fire:ye heardthe voiceof the words, but sawno similitude;only[ye heard] a voice.13And he declaredunto you his covenant, which he commandedyou to perform,[even] tencommandments;and he wrotethem upon twotablesof stone.14And the LORDcommandedme at that timeto teachyou statutesand judgments, that ye might dothem in the landwhither ye go overto possessit.

Warning against Idolatry

(Deuteronomy 12:29-32;Ezekiel 6:1-7)

15Take ye therefore goodheedunto yourselves;for ye sawno manner of similitudeon the day[that] the LORDspakeunto you in Horebout of the midstof the fire:16Lest ye corrupt[yourselves], and makeyou a graven image, the similitudeof any figure, the likenessof maleor female,17The likenessof any beastthat [is] on the earth, the likenessof any wingedfowlthat fliethin the air,18The likenessof any thing that creepethon the ground, the likenessof any fishthat [is] in the watersbeneaththe earth:19And lest thou lift upthine eyesunto heaven, and when thou seestthe sun,and the moon, and the stars,[even] all the hostof heaven, shouldest be drivento worshipthem, and servethem, which the LORDthy Godhath dividedunto all nationsunder the whole heaven.20But the LORDhath takenyou, and brought you forthout of the ironfurnace,[even] out of Egypt,to be unto him a peopleof inheritance,as [ye are] this day.

21Furthermore the LORDwas angrywith me for your sakes, and swarethat I should not go overJordan, and that I should not goin unto that goodland, which the LORDthy Godgiveththee [for] an inheritance:22But I must diein this land,I must not go overJordan:but ye shall go over, and possessthat goodland.23Take heedunto yourselves, lest ye forgetthe covenantof the LORDyour God,which he madewith you, and makeyou a graven image,[or] the likenessof any[thing], which the LORDthy Godhath forbiddenthee.24For the LORDthy God[is] a consumingfire,[even] a jealousGod.

25When thou shalt begetchildren, and children'schildren, and ye shall have remained longin the land, and shall corrupt[yourselves], and makea graven image,[or] the likenessof any [thing], and shall doevilin the sightof the LORDthy God,to provoke him to anger:26I callheavenand earthto witnessagainst you this day, that ye shall soonutterlyperishfrom off the landwhereunto ye go overJordanto possessit; ye shall not prolong[your] daysupon it, but shall utterlybe destroyed.27And the LORDshall scatteryou among the nations, and ye shall be leftfewin numberamong the heathen, whither the LORDshall leadyou.28And there ye shall servegods, the workof men'shands, woodand stone, which neither see,nor hear, nor eat,nor smell.29But if from thence thou shalt seekthe LORDthy God,thou shalt find[him], if thou seekhim with all thy heartand with all thy soul.30When thou art in tribulation, and all these thingsare comeupon thee, [even] in the latterdays,if thou turnto the LORDthy God,and shalt be obedientunto his voice;31(For the LORDthy God[is] a mercifulGod;) he will not forsakethee, neither destroythee, nor forgetthe covenantof thy fatherswhich he swareunto them.

The Lord Alone is God

32For asknow of the daysthat are past, which werebeforethee, since the daythat Godcreatedmanupon the earth, and [ask] from the one sideof heavenunto the other, whether there hath been [any such thing] as this greatthing[is], or hath been heardlike it?33Did [ever] peoplehearthe voiceof Godspeaking outof the midstof the fire,as thou hast heard, and live?34Or hath Godassayedto go[and] takehim a nationfrom the midstof [another] nation,by temptations,by signs, and by wonders, and by war,and by a mightyhand, and by a stretched outarm, and by greatterrors, according to all that the LORDyour Goddidfor you in Egyptbefore your eyes?35Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest knowthat the LORDhe [is] God;[there is] none elsebeside him.36Out of heavenhe made thee to hearhis voice, that he might instructthee: and upon earthhe shewedthee his greatfire;and thou heardesthis wordsout of the midstof the fire.37And because he lovedthy fathers, therefore he chosetheir seedafterthem, and brought thee outin his sightwith his mightypowerout of Egypt;38To drive outnationsfrom beforethee greaterand mightierthan thou [art], to bringthee in, to givethee their land[for] an inheritance,as [it is] this day.39Knowtherefore this day,and consider[it] in thine heart, that the LORDhe [is] Godin heavenabove, and upon the earthbeneath: [there is] none else.40Thou shalt keeptherefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I commandthee this day, that it may go wellwith thee, and with thy childrenafterthee, and that thou mayest prolong[thy] daysupon the earth, which the LORDthy Godgiveththee, for ever.
