The Reading of the Law

(Nehemiah 8:1-8)

9And Moseswrotethis law,and deliveredit unto the prieststhe sonsof Levi, which barethe arkof the covenantof the LORD,and unto all the eldersof Israel.10And Mosescommandedthem, saying,At the endof [every] sevenyears,in the solemnityof the yearof release,in the feastof tabernacles,11When all Israelis cometo appearbeforethe LORDthy Godin the placewhich he shall choose, thou shalt readthis lawbefore all Israelin their hearing.12Gatherthe peopletogether, men, and women, and children, and thy strangerthat [is] within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fearthe LORDyour God,and observeto doall the wordsof this law:13And [that] their children, which have not known[any thing], may hear, and learnto fearthe LORDyour God,as long asye livein the landwhither ye go overJordanto possessit.

God's Charge to Joshua

14And the LORDsaidunto Moses,Behold, thy daysapproachthat thou must die:callJoshua, and presentyourselves in the tabernacleof the congregation, that I may give him a charge. And Mosesand Joshuawent, and presentedthemselves in the tabernacleof the congregation.15And the LORDappearedin the tabernaclein a pillarof a cloud:and the pillarof the cloudstoodover the doorof the tabernacle.16And the LORDsaidunto Moses,Behold, thou shalt sleepwith thy fathers;and this peoplewill rise up,and go a whoringafterthe godsof the strangersof the land, whither they go[to be] amongthem, and will forsakeme, and breakmy covenantwhich I have madewith them.17Then my angershall be kindledagainst them in that day,and I will forsakethem, and I will hidemy facefrom them, and they shall be devoured, and manyevilsand troublesshall befallthem; so that they will sayin that day,Are not these evilscomeupon us, because our God[is] not amongus?18And I will surelyhidemy facein that dayfor all the evilswhich they shall have wrought,in thatthey are turnedunto othergods.

19Now therefore writeye this songfor you, and teachit the childrenof Israel:putit in their mouths, that this songmay be a witnessfor me against the childrenof Israel.20For when I shall have broughtthem into the landwhich I swareunto their fathers, that flowethwith milkand honey;and they shall have eatenand filledthemselves, and waxen fat;then will they turnunto othergods, and servethem, and provokeme, and breakmy covenant.21And it shall come to pass, when manyevilsand troublesare befallenthem, that this songshall testifyagainstthem as a witness;for it shall not be forgottenout of the mouthsof their seed:for I knowtheir imaginationwhich they go about, even now, before I have broughtthem into the landwhich I sware.22Mosestherefore wrotethis songthe same day,and taughtit the childrenof Israel.

23And he gave Joshuathe sonof Nuna charge, and said,Be strongand of a good courage:for thou shalt bringthe childrenof Israelinto the landwhich I swareunto them: and I will be with thee.
