The Covenant in Moab
1These [are] the wordsof the covenant,which the LORDcommandedMosesto makewith the childrenof Israelin the landof Moab,beside the covenantwhich he madewith them in Horeb.
2And Mosescalledunto all Israel,and saidunto them, Ye have seenall that the LORDdidbefore your eyesin the landof Egyptunto Pharaoh,and unto all his servants,and unto all his land;3The greattemptationswhich thine eyeshave seen,the signs,and those greatmiracles:4Yet the LORDhath not givenyou an heartto perceive,and eyesto see,and earsto hear,unto this day.5And I have ledyou fortyyearsin the wilderness:your clothesare not waxen oldupon you, and thy shoeis not waxen oldupon thy foot.6Ye have not eatenbread,neither have ye drunkwineor strong drink:that ye might knowthat I [am] the LORDyour God.7And when ye cameunto this place,Sihonthe kingof Heshbon,and Ogthe kingof Bashan,came outagainstus unto battle,and we smotethem:8And we tooktheir land,and gaveit for an inheritanceunto the Reubenites,and to the Gadites,and to the halftribeof Manasseh.9Keeptherefore the wordsof this covenant,and dothem, that ye may prosperin all that ye do.
10Ye standthis dayall of you beforethe LORDyour God;your captainsof your tribes,your elders,and your officers,[with] all the menof Israel,11Your little ones,your wives,and thy strangerthat [is] inthy camp,from the hewerof thy woodunto the drawerof thy water:12That thou shouldest enterinto covenantwith the LORDthy God,and into his oath,which the LORDthy Godmakethwith thee this day:13That he may establishthee to dayfor a peopleunto himself, and [that] he may be unto thee a God,as he hath saidunto thee, and as he hath swornunto thy fathers,to Abraham,to Isaac,and to Jacob.
14Neither with you only do I makethis covenantand this oath;15But with [him] that standethhere with us thisdaybeforethe LORDour God,and also with [him] that [is] not here with us this day:16(For ye knowhow we have dweltin the landof Egypt;and how we camethroughthe nationswhich ye passed by;17And ye have seentheir abominations,and their idols,woodand stone,silverand gold,which [were] among them:)18Lest there should beamong you man,or woman,or family,or tribe,whose heartturneth awaythis dayfrom the LORDour God,to go[and] servethe godsof these nations;lest there should beamong you a rootthat bearethgalland wormwood;19And it come to pass, when he heareththe wordsof this curse,that he blesshimself in his heart,saying,I shall have peace,thoughI walkin the imaginationof mine heart,to adddrunkennessto thirst:20The LORDwillnot sparehim, but then the angerof the LORDand his jealousyshall smokeagainst that man,and all the cursesthat are writtenin this bookshall lieupon him, and the LORDshall blot outhis namefrom under heaven.21And the LORDshall separatehim unto evilout of all the tribesof Israel,according to all the cursesof the covenantthat are writtenin this bookof the law:
22So that the generationto comeof your childrenthat shall rise upafteryou, and the strangerthat shall comefrom a farland,shall say,when they seethe plaguesof that land,and the sicknesseswhich the LORDhath laidupon it;23[And that] the whole landthereof [is] brimstone,and salt,[and] burning,[that] it is not sown,nor beareth,nor any grassgroweththerein, like the overthrowof Sodom,and Gomorrah,Admah,and Zeboim,which the LORDoverthrewin his anger,and in his wrath:24Even all nationsshall say,Wherefore hath the LORDdonethus unto this land?what [meaneth] the heatof this greatanger?25Then men shall say,Because they have forsakenthe covenantof the LORDGodof their fathers,which he madewith them when he brought them forthout of the landof Egypt:26For they wentand servedothergods,and worshippedthem, godswhom they knewnot, and [whom] he had not givenunto them:27And the angerof the LORDwas kindledagainst this land,to bringupon it all the cursesthat are writtenin this book:28And the LORDrootedthem out of their landin anger,and in wrath,and in greatindignation,and castthem into anotherland,as [it is] this day.
29The secret[things belong] unto the LORDour God:but those [things which are] revealed[belong] unto us and to our childrenforever,that [we] may doall the wordsof this law.
