(Numbers 35:6-34;Deuteronomy 4:41-43;Joshua 20:1-9) 1When the LORDthy Godhath cut offthe nations, whose landthe LORDthy Godgiveththee, and thou succeedestthem, and dwellestin their cities, and in their houses;2Thou shalt separatethreecitiesfor thee in the midstof thy land, which the LORDthy Godgiveththee to possessit.3Thou shalt preparethee a way,and divide the coastsof thy land, which the LORDthy Godgiveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayermay fleethither. 4And this [is] the caseof the slayer, which shall fleethither, that he may live:Whoso killethhis neighbourignorantly, whom he hatednot in timepast;5As when a man goethinto the woodwith his neighbourto hewwood, and his handfetcheth a strokewith the axeto cut downthe tree, and the headslippethfrom the helve, and lightethupon his neighbour, that he die;he shall fleeunto oneof those cities, and live:6Lest the avengerof the bloodpursuethe slayer, whilehis heartis hot,and overtakehim, because the wayis long, and slayhim;whereas he [was] not worthyof death, inasmuch ashe hatedhim not in timepast.7Wherefore I commandthee, saying,Thou shalt separatethreecitiesfor thee. 8And if the LORDthy Godenlargethy coast,as he hath swornunto thy fathers, and givethee all the landwhich he promisedto giveunto thy fathers;9If thou shalt keepall these commandmentsto dothem, which I commandthee this day,to lovethe LORDthy God,and to walkeverin his ways;then shalt thou addthreecitiesmore for thee, beside these three:10That innocentbloodbe not shedinthy land, which the LORDthy Godgiveththee [for] an inheritance, and [so] bloodbe upon thee. 11But if any manhatehis neighbour, and lie in waitfor him, and rise upagainst him, and smitehim mortallythat he die,and fleethinto oneof thesecities:12Then the eldersof his cityshall sendand fetchhim thence, and deliverhim into the handof the avengerof blood, that he may die.13Thine eyeshall not pityhim, but thou shalt put away[the guilt of] innocentbloodfrom Israel, that it may go wellwith thee. 14Thou shalt not removethy neighbour'slandmark, which they of old timehave setin thine inheritance, which thou shalt inheritin the landthat the LORDthy Godgiveththee to possessit.
